  1. Keep this amazing series going! This game is so good and especially from your game designer perspective I feel like this game has a lot to offer. I can tell you're already invested in the game which I'm sure you've noticed from the backseaters a lot of people love this game. Hopefully you can make it through this without spoilers.

  2. So from what I understand, Ross, the world is made up of modular artwork for most things other than walls. So lamp posts, those oval containers, shells in the walls, doors, everything is on its own sprite sheet that is pulled from by the game. I know this because I've done a dive into the art and sound effects for my own personal projects, and it's ridiculous how many variations of things are in the game based on location and area. I assume they they place it in Unity (which I believe is where they put together the game) on different layers to make parallax afterwards. For example, the decor for the crossroads alone has nearly a dozen pages with like twenty or more things on the page. That's not even including the enemy/player animation sheets where it has all the frames of their possible movements, and some creatures have multiple pages due to how varied their fights are. It's an insanely complex system but really cool to read into.

  3. when watching the streams, i had to close chat just to stay sane and enjoy the gameplay. the backseating is INSANE. ross specified that this was a blind playthrough and that he didn't want any spoilers for the game, and chat still insists on telling him where to go, what to do, unrevealed lore, future mobility unlocks and spells– it's honestly just awful. what's most disappointing is that these people have played hollow knight before, and it's like they've forgotten that exploration is what made it so good in the first place. things like "use your map to figure out pathways you haven't been through" and "you'll have to come back later" are fine and great. saying stuff like "you get a wall jump from the mantis village" and "has he gotten [insert upgrade/area/character/boss] yet?" makes you an asshole.

  4. As much as I adore this game (~250 hours across three platforms), I wasn't sorry when Game Grumps gave it up, Arin didn't seem that invested. Ross looks like he's enjoying it so far so I'll be looking forward to this series!
TenMoreMinutes has a great playthrough too.

  5. YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES

Edit: oh my god you are horrible at this game what are you doing, if you die to moss knight, thats fine theyre pretty hard at first, but if the reason you died is because you had full soul, 2 health, and didnt heal, then didnt see the projectiles when you yourself said that this game is really good at telegraphing? 0/10 get a new one(im exaggerating obviously, but you do seriously need to practice)

  6. okay i apologize for throwing this shade but exactly how this playthrough is going is what i wanted from game grumps playing this game. the unfortunate thing about the grumps is that in their format much of their attention goes into banter instead of the game. they didnt take much time to admire the art or level design and arin got stuck in silly places. I do understand that hollow knight is a pretty unique game and a lot of people get really lost and overwhelmed at the start but its just nice to watch someone like ross appreciate this game for what it is and sight read it well.

  7. Yes! MOAR lol. I know the travel can seem boring but the game is about exploration too. This seemed to be a montage of bosses and interactions. Love hearing you talk game design and cant wait for you to see how this game excels in it c:

  8. Wow; what a coincidence, I finally started playing Hollow Knight for the first time on the same exact day this video came out! I'm not streaming it or anything, though, so my experience is probably a little different. But regardless, I think we can both see why this game is so widely acclaimed!

  10. 36:30 Games like hollow knight that have you do a lot of backtracking often provide short cut paths that require abilities you get later on making the backtracking feel more fresh and unique.
