Making video game music into Hip-hop – Episode 1

In today’s video we are bringing back the Nintendo Gameboy Advance. This retro handheld console has been with me for a couple years now. I’ve made two other video’s making beats out of it but this time around it has an entirely new look. I swapped the old purple case with a nice vibrant see through green. I replaced that old OLED screen with a beautiful LCD screen, and of course I replaced all those grime filled buttons with some brand new ones. Sampling from video games has always been fun to do because as you progress through certain levels the music changes. Maybe this will be a regular thing I do where I flip VGM on a regular basis. I also picked up this Gameboy Advance video game that 369 games. The more games it has the potential to discovering great Video Game samples. Anyway I found a sample that really grabbed my attention and decided to record it into Ableton to make this Hip-hop instrumental. Thank you for watching!

  1. Great job (as always), I sample from video games all the time! I remember a time in hip-hop when it was kind of taboo to sample from anything other than records… I'm glad that has changed now. I'll sample off if cassettes, VHS, video games… anything! If it has an audio out, I'll sample from it!
