I’m not a fan of blocks in martial arts… at least not the way some people teach them! In this home workout, I’ll share my thoughts on how to block for self-defense.

  1. Honestly the only way to prepare for a fight other than stretching everyday and practicing what you know is to spar. Sparring teaches you to move, set up strikes, intercept incoming hits and emphasizes stamina and timing. And knowing bjj is a must because 80% of all fights end up on the ground.

  2. Thank you Sensei.
You remind me of some words I heard years ago from a martial arts teacher: you can't rely only on defending, attacking is the best defense; you can't rely only on your strength, there will always be a stronger beast: being a happy, confident person will tell others you are a good person but not an easy target.

  3. I'm really happy to hear you say that in some people's head 'blocking means stopping.' It's great that you debunk that, because in Karate especially blocks can sometimes be performed as 'stops' whereas they should really be used to break an aggressive opponent's attack before delivering a superior one of your own. Nice content Sensei. Happy new year.
