  1. I'm so glad to see this. I finally picked this up out of my hall of shame with all the other neglected games I have and am absolutely loving it. Absolutely beautiful, perfectly challenging, and charming to a T.

  2. So speaking of Myelin falling in love with games, is he going to look at undertale next. I know the community kind of became toxic around it but the game is still amazing. It has the same charm and story telling greatness of hollow knight as well as a creative twist on the game loop and combat system. Plus who can forget the extremely memorable music in it.

Myelin, I strongly recommend you give Undertale a chance and the only thing I will say is give the pacifist run a try. With how much you care about marines in Halo, you will be very much rewarded for caring just as much about the enemies in undertale.

  3. I am sooo sorry I’m missing your stream… studying for a board exam 😔
But I am very glad you are finally playing Hollow Knight. I’ll watch the full recording if available afterwards. Hope you enjoy Matt 🙌🏽

  4. Are you spying on me? A week ago I picked up Hollow Knight, a game that’s been out for years and just now you make a video about it? Things like this happen all of the time for me and it’s fucking weird.

  5. As someone who's loves both Destiny and Hollow Knight, I'm overjoyed to see you have started playing this amazing game! I look forward to seeing you go through the rest of it. Much love and keep up the good work!

  6. Bruh you gota try Hades next. It’s a roguelike with a badass soundtrack and a lot of small lines of dialogue from Greek gods. They all have personality and a lot of it just in one paragraph. I’m obsessed with Hades right now on my break from D2

  7. I realize that this video is kind of tongue-in-cheek, and partially joking around, and not really meant to be taken literally, but let me just say that “Metroidvania” isn’t meant to imply the game is necessarily just derivative of Metroid or Castlevania (although this games obviously does take cues from both, as well as Dark Souls). As I understand it, “Metroidvania” in current usage just means it is an exploration-based non-linear adventure game with an interconnected world, which unlocks as you acquire power-ups, allowing you to gradually access more areas.

The thing is, saying all that is a mouthful, so we all use “Metroidvania” just as a shorthand to express that it includes that kind of gameplay. Or “Soulslike” refers to games with similar elements to Dark Souls. It’s a dumb term, but it makes sense — since English doesn’t really have any word that is particularly suitable to express this concept, and Metroid was the first game in this genre, and for a long time the Metroid franchise and Castlevania franchise (after Symphony of the Night) were the biggest and most prominent games with these elements.

I should also mention the original Metroid ITSELF was derivative of other games — mechanically especially the original Legend of Zelda, and stylistically and thematically to the Alien franchise. Being derivative is not really a bad thing, as I see it. Hollow Knight blends some of the BEST elements of Metroid, Dark Souls, Castlevania, etc. And it’s undoubtedly the BEST Metroidvania game I’ve played since Super Metroid.

Hollow Knight is a masterful blend of genres that manages to incorporate the absolute best elements of Metroidvanias and Soulslikes. It is like they put both genres in a blender and managed to make the perfect fusion of both.

  8. Very interestingly, as humans we like to compare our current reality to prior experiences, hence how many games became Metroidvanias or Soul-likes, in part they became a golden standard or reference of sorts. Enjoy Hollow Knight you’re in for a treat!

  9. Hollow Knight is really in a class of It's own. It's a metroidvania with soulsborne difficulty and risk/reward. I cant get enough of it. I think my first playthru took me around 60 hours to complete, and I didn't even 100% it (or 121% or whatever it is). Now I can 100% it in like 20 hours. I know other people can do it way quicker, im not bragging. It just shows how difficult the game is and if you work at it, you can get really good and efficient. It's such a fun game.

Team Cherry 🍒 did a damn fine job, and I cant wait for Silksong. I hope its just as good, if not better, than HK1.

  10. "What is the criteria for a game to be called a metroidvania" open map that frequently uses power gating (you need x new ability to get to x new place) to control your progress through the game. That's really it. Yes, Hollow Knight is a metroidvania. It being a very very good game does not mean it's not a metroidvania. I enjoyed the video!
