Monster Hunter Rise is not a Live Service Game

I’ve seen a lot of posts and comments of hunters that feel disappointed in the content of Monster Hunter Rise, so today I decided to tackle that topic.

This title is currently available on Nintendo Switch.

  1. I loved the whole live service aspect of MHW, the game never felt dead until a while after the final update, especially with the festivals, a couple themed weeks with special event quests to celebrate with your friends and everyone in the 16 player hubs was just magical.

But I do agree about the Kulve Taroth and Safi'jiiva sieges, they should have been on at all times and Kulve should have been easier to grind like Safi where you'll always receive a weapon of the type you were using in the siege.

  2. I think when people say they want a live service model they mean they want a game that is just continuously updated like world was for many years instead of 2 then onto the new game.

  3. I think 2.0 and 3.0 content was actually planned for base game but didn’t make it in because of lack of time. That’s why we got so much stuff in theses two updates, and the game didn’t have a proper ending at first.

  4. Battle Pass?
    Fireborne?
This is "Monster Hunter," not "Fornite," to put in Battle pass for the game options that won't make sense. MHW: Iceborne is the G-Rank, so Fireborne won't be a thing anyway, and we all knew that since Iceborne was made with updates coming through

  5. MH should evolve in many ways, but keeping it the way it was like in MH4U or before that. EVER since MHG to MHR, made it very easy and confidential for how the game wants to experiments newer mechanics and easy level gameplay and fun, but I would love that MH should go back for how 4U or 3U was, and keeping it straight clean, but the updates only make MHR overall good and better like MHW

  6. The end game in this game is pretty bad in my opinion, but it's also pre-DLC content. In world you were trying to farm multiple decorations. In this game you just make whatever decos you want, and it really doesn't take long to get the parts you need to make them. That's a bit dissapointing. All you're chasing here is a single piece of equipment when you're farming, a Talisman. What if you've already got what you see as an amazing Talisman for your builds? You're then chasing a Talisman that's hopefully better, but could be nearly impossible to come by, leading to hundreds of hours of hunting for what generally amounts to nothing.

That's one view. The other is 'I don't have to spend hundreds of hours trying to get decorations I might never get'. I understand both points of view. Personally, I felt much more excited to consistently come back to World and GU day after day for a long time because I felt like I was always chasing something that would be an improvment. With this game I feel no desire to play it at all rght now, and that stinks.

  7. I wouldn't mind if World or Rise had a secondary expansions past G/Master rank, make us fight god level monsters have our palicos and palamutes become more powerful as we continue to level up in experience and armor. That said, I would NOT want it to be an everlasting live service, I detest live service models. But if a Monster Hunter like these last few wanted to go an extra year, create a new level of difficulty and growth, a level that would make our Hunters into demi gods when revisiting low and High rank after the fact lol, and brand new colossal monster fights, I would not hate that.

  8. Honestly, the only things I am disappointed about is that there is no real reason to grind Apex Monsters since Rampage Weapons only need 2 or so Apex Parts at most to upgrade and you are practically guaranteed getting that within one hunt. Also, there is no Apex Armor…. like why couldn't they make Apex Armor like Beta Armor in World or "R" Series in Gen (note: I don't think the armor themselves need to be like the deviant armor in Gen). I mean they got rid of all the Gunner armor looks (that became the appearance of Beta Armor in World) so they have a lot of designs ready…

Otherwise, we need more challenging quests but I have every hope this will be fixed with future event quests and collabs.

  9. I'm in the major minority where I really don't like Rise. It just doesn't offer me much when I play MH games for the challenge. I like the absolute endgame monsters where I probably can't slay them the first time and I want to really have to earn completing that hunt. I like MH games because typically one comes out and I can sink my teeth into it for months and have it be the game I play every night. Rise just wasn't that game, so I hope the next has something for players that want to cry at the end of G rank. It just kinda felt gross blazing through and just dropping the game until the next small update, doing all the elders/apex once and then that's it, wait for the next update. I'm glad other people like it though and that it's helped bring more people into the series.

  10. Monster Hunter as a franchise has a few issues but their business model is not one of them. The way the games are structured now is perfect imo. U can easily put hundreds of hours into the game without getting bored of it BECAUSE it isnt live service. U can play the game, stop playing for a week or even a month, come back and be able to catch up again immediately without having to wait for an event. Obv the exception to thid was world with kulve and safi, but yeah i didnt really ever grind or even fight kulve because of that, and safi i did fight a lot but i didnt really grind safi. Monster hunter as a model is perfect how it is without the live service bs, and i for one am very happy with rise, and am very excited for the g rank expansion

  11. I think there's a lesson to learn from the endgame of World vs endgame of Rise. As you point out, you can effectively complete your build by grinding out all the decos and having a good-enough charm. A few people are chasing God charms, but many are content with their current build. And once you finish all your builds, without new challenges to use your build against, eventually you get bored and leave. That's a reality for all games (not just MH games), and it's not even necessarily a bad thing.

Contrast with World/Iceborne, where certainly I had *builds*, but they were never the fancy builds I saw in YouTube videos. It was all about making due with what you had. But, the second you got that one special deco to drop, suddenly you could replace this helm, or squeeze in an additional skill. You never felt like you were done. Obviously there's the ethical concerns about putting thousands of hours into a game and still not getting a particular deco to drop, but for better or worse it DID give some players the motivation to grind that endgame for hundreds of hours.

So you have World on one end with grinding 1000 hours for a Mind's Eye deco, and Rise on the other with many players getting Good Enough and not caring about God charms. Perhaps World2 can find the perfect balance, where players have enough motivation to stick around in endgame without certain decos being mythically rare.

  12. World plus iceborne is 100%better than current rise. Both in gameplay and content. Rise only has the better looking sets and weapons going for it soo far. I would've been happier with another world xpansion. They already made world easier than 4u and Gen and now With wire bugs its even easier than world

  14. When I first played MHW, it was so difficult and the adjustments were painful. I replayed it again this year and it was easy. I think you have to consider that MHR needs to let people adjust to he gameplay first. If you're looking for more thrill, I think the High Rank quests would suffice. I am expecting the same with rise.

  15. I was not expecting 3.0 to be as big as 2.0 and simple reason…most if not all the stuff in 2.0 was most likely going to be in the base game, but they decided to delay the content for a ma4ch release likely due to covid, and as a stand alone update(not counting 2.0) it's a great update.

  16. unpopular opinions Fatalis was the worst thing to happen to world/icebourne. the fatalis armor set giving you all skills removed any mix set creativity. and then the blatant middle funger on shield users with frost fang barioth and arch tempered velkhana was just completely unnecessary

  17. first time i played MH was with world, seems to be a lot of peoples entry in the series. i heard of it from my sister and we played together. i assumed that iceborne was a traditional DLC and it was paywalling me, i got to a point after the main story finished but before i started getting into endgame at least for base and i didnt know what to do next. after that i just sorta stopped playing, especially encouraged by everyone getting cool gear and monsters and not me because poor. now im sorta conflicted because i have rise and looking back at world i realized how much more there is i missed. but i like playing multiplayer and now with the attention around rise its kinda weird going back to world when i have more of rise to explore

  18. This game is awesome… these last 2 updates feel like things they wanted to add in release but probably couldn't. Now it feels complete, I do think it'd be cool if they add a couple more monsters before the ultimate version

  19. The nerve of Capcom, Rise is the most barebones and content-starved game of all time. Why, I've only put in 168 hours of playtime, and I'm already out of things to do! When I spend 60 dollars on a game, I anticipate; no, EXPECT at least 400 hours worth of content with my AAA games. Like…uh….Resident Evil 8!

  20. Its not a live service game. Its just an underwhelming game thats all. Maybe they didnt want to risk it. Now that that it is successful they will probably pour a satisfying amount of content in Rise Ultimate.

  21. Compared to ANY previous entry of MH, Rise feels VERY weak. I had fun, but its easily the one with the least hours by a HUGE margin. Apex Monsters add NOTHING to the game. No challenge, no rewards, absolutely nothing. There were no really interesting or really epic feeling fights…..like…I clearly remember my first encounter with XJ, but as for Rise….even 3.0 didnt really excite me. MHR needs proper endgame content with proper rewards. 2.0 was bigger than 3.0, but still nowhere near enough content to keep me entertained long enough. Rampages are also rather underwhelming. I only did them for unlocking the Apex Quests and if they dont change it, I hope they also wont add anything that forces me to go in there again….So yeah….MH for a single playthrough (with all quests done at least once) will by default accumulate some hours, but comparing it to other MH entries….its by far my least favorite. Too easy and not enough content.

  22. I wonder if they'll continue with console releases being more like world, and portable releases being more traditional. I loved the amount of content in world, but when kulve came out I lost a lot of interest. Still played a bit, and came back for iceborne but I respect my time too much to chase rng dragons, hoping for something good

  23. i think live service monster hunter would be a mistake been playing since tri ive never had an issue with the content in each game since then, ive played each since then with over 1000 hours as well. I think capcom do a great job and they're one of the only companies ill preorder from anymore.

  24. I don't think I'd ever want Monster Hunter to be a Live Service Game. Even though World wasn't entirely one, I could still get those Live Service vibes from it (like you mentioned with the seasonal events) and that just rubbed me the wrong way.

  25. I agree with you on everything except the talisman-decoration shift. I had every decoration I wanted or needed in MHW&MHWI and it took a hell of a grind to get them all, not gonna deny that but it was something doable. Also even if you didn't get something you wanted you would eventually get something worthwhile(mightybow deco, guard up deco, etc..) that would incentivise and compel you to play and learn another weapon. However what it lacked was you had to the specific investigations in order to get them where as in rise your talismans are auto-generated in the background while you do what ever you wanna do.

Now what it bugs me with the talisman grind is that the RNG has now been multiplied gigantically and your odds of getting what you would like has therefore risen enormously. To get a decent charm let alone a god one, you have to do so many melds hoping to get a single one in multiple of 50 melds and it rarely happens. The shit you get is all trash so there is no incentive to try to play with another weapon and even if you wanted to what the hell is skills like muck res and master mounter gonna help you on?

For reference your chance of getting a wex2, CritB2 charm is 1 in 76million! Where as to get an attack deco in 4 gold box investigations was 1 in 500 !

I would have preferred a system where like rampage weapons you could have the option to craft your own talisman. Have the option to select some skills on the tali and leave the rest for rng or smth like that and make it a worthwhile grind not something easily obtainable.
The current system is way more convoluted than it needs to be and doesnt reward you enough imo. Also this issue is extremely subjective since if you were lucky to get god charms then you have no reason to be against the system where as if you havent it can ''sometimes'' make or break your sets. From your livestreams I have seen your god charms so there is no reason for you to be frustrated from the system where as in world you couldnt get your single guard up deco and it frustrated the shit out of you.

  26. Monster Hunter was awesome because when you bought the game, you knew it was a 100% finished product. That’s not the case anymore. They had everybody waiting for big updates to finish the base game, just like a live service game. And people defended it. We’re gonna get a live service eventually. Rise was in development waaaaayy before Covid. So it’s not a valid excuse

  27. People thinking Apex armors and weapons will make the game more fun grow up the game is already packed with good content and the gameplay has been improved try other weapons and builds and actually enjoy exploring the maps in the game instead of "hunt hunt need dark souls difficulty to enjoy my game" mindset
