Like its predecessor, Mortal Kombat 11 is a 2.5D fighting game, but it features numerous innovations over the previous game. In addition to the Fatalities, the Brutalities (coming from Ultimate MK3) and the Mercy (the latter already present in MK3), the gameplay also introduces the “Fatal Blow”, which is activated when the health drops below 30%, and a “Krushing Blow”, an updated version of a special move that is activated after meeting certain requirements. When these Krushing Blows are performed, which can only be performed once per encounter, they cause different effects, such as damage over time, add single damage dealt or opening a new combo. Another new mechanic is the “Flawless Block”, which allows a counterattack after blocking an attack with precise timing . Each character has a unique set of costumes and weapons, which can be further customized by players thanks to the Custom Variation, which allows you to create new variations for the characters.
Sonya Blade, Johnny Cage, Noob Saibot, Baraka, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Scorpion, Kano, Kabal, Jade, Shao Kahn, Kitana, Liu Kang and Kung Lao, all veterans of the series; they are joined by Frost, a disciple of Sub Zero introduced in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, Skarlet, who debuted as a playable DLC character in Mortal Kombat IX, and five characters introduced in the last chapter, namely Cassie Cage, Jacqui Briggs, D’Vorah , Kotal Kahn and Erron Black. Instead, three new playable characters in the series make their debut: Geras, a follower of Kronika who has the power to control the passage of time and the sand ; Kollector, follower of Shao Kahn; and Cetrion, the Elder Goddess and guardian of Nature. Another character introduced in the game is the final boss Kronika, a Titan able to control the passage of time like her servant Geras, as well as having manipulated the timeline since the beginning of the series; according to Ed Boon, she is the first female boss of the series .
