My BIGGEST Buck – DIY European Mount (Professional Quality)

Step by step how to do your own european mount at home. This process takes patience, but the results are unreal! DIY euro mounts can turn ugly really quick, but these tips will help your skull come out perfect every time!

HOW TO:
– Skin face, remove eyes
– Wrap antlers with plastic wrap and secure with tape (do NOT submerge or discoloration will occur)
– Add about 2 TBS of DAWN soap (or any dish soap) to pot of water
– Bring water to a low simmer DO NOT BOIL
– Allow skull to “boil” for ~5 hours (depends on water temp, again DO NOT BOIL)
– Remove as much tissue as possible
– Repeat as many times as needed
– Pressure washing will help remove tissue, but will damage fragile nasal bones
– If you’re trying to keep the nasal bones, you will spend a LOT of time cleaning out the tissue. I recommend a long very skinny screw driver and needle nose pliers.
– Allow to dry completely (~12 hours)
– Apply 40 Volume Developer all over skull (avoid antlers)
– Allow to sit MINIMUM 8 hours, but up to 24 hours depending on how white you want your skull

  1. my first elk came out great, but i messed up my 6×7 the next time 🙁 the first time i had borrowed a friends high pressure sprayer. then i used a lower pressure washer i had bought. boiling was the same, except that i boiled longer because the pressure washer wasnt taking off as much. flaking bone, nostril bones disentergrating or coming off. sad learning curve. wont happen again

  2. I always wondered how that was done. I knew the water in the hose house was gonna freeze lol. Gotta use a short hose for the anti siphon to work. or unscrew the hose hose. Is that a spigot that you tied the skull 2 to keep it from dropping in the Pot? Great Vid

  3. its almost all gristle on the back. i wouldnt over boil it for that to come off. just scrape and cut that off. or, like you said, the front will come off. and, it loosens other bones. you can also get flaking. i pull mine out every 45 mins and pressure wash. dont leave it in there anymore than you absolutely have to. borrow or rent a high pressure washer. ive had several come out fantastic that way!

  4. Turned out great Allie. That process is exactly how I do my euros. Baking powder in with the soap when simmering helps with the removal of the gunk. Always enjoy your videos have a BLESSED day

  5. Great vid!! I shot a huge boar this season. I tried the long and slow bow method but it got away and it went to full boil for a few minutes. No problem, skull was clean, a few fractured bones and loose teeth, but overall it came out great!!!

  6. WHEN I DID MIND IT WASN'T FRESH FOUND IT AT THE LANDFILL WHERE MY SON WAS CUTTING THE GRASS , LANDFILL . LUCKILY I HAD A HEAVY DUTY TRASH BAG ! IT WAS WHAT THE VULTURES LEFT OVER BEFORE WE CUT THAT AREA . CAN'T REMEMBER HOW MANY TIMES I THROUGH UP & NOT ! FINALLY GOT IT TO ALL JUST BONE . COULDN'T SEE WASTING IT OUT IN THE FIELD EVEN THOUGH THE FIELD MICE , FOXES , ETC WOULD HAVE GNAWED ON IT UNTIL GONE .
MAYBE POWER SPRAYER MIGHT HELP EASIER , BUT RAIN SUIT & MASK & NOT TO CLOSE WHILE POWER WASHING .WHILE I WAS TYPING THIS YOU SAID WHAT I WAS THINKING / SAYING . TURNED OUT REALLY NICE . BE SAFE ! THANK YOU ! ENJOYED !

  8. One tip; you can take a wire and put it into a drill, put a bend in the wire, then stick it in the hole, slowly scrambling the brain, the brain will come-out much easier.

  9. You did a good job on that. You know it's funny I've been hunting all my life & I have never did a mount or took anything to the taxidermist ever – is that weird. What I don't use for handle or other materials I just give away or trade.

  10. Allie, nice job! I remember when I did my first one. It turned out great too. I have, when things are frozen, used the shower and the jet option on the shower head to squirt and wash the loose particulate off before and after scrapping. It works great. I use a steel eating spoon and a butter knife more than any other tools. The brain can be a giant pain, but often HOT water will dissolve it, like from a shower head. Just make sure all the big chunks don't go down the drain, pretty sure it wouldn't be good for the plumbing. Again, I think you did a great job! Thanks for sharing.
