NieR: Automata – Adam and Eve – More To Their Androgyny?

It’s surprising to me that I never did more videos on NieR: Automata. I personally consider it to be the most profound game ever made. Just when you think you comprehend every complex layer this game has, I find myself peeling back more. One of the greatest examples of NieR’s hidden complexity is with the characters of Adam and Eve.

  1. I do find Adam and Eve to be similar to 2B and 9S even tho 2B and 9S doesn't want to be compared to robots.

    Spoilers Ahead

When 2B is "killed" by A2, 9S litterally have the same response that Eve had, he do try to hide it in some way. But, he lost his meaning of life too by losing 2B and start to become insane and by the end of the game, he trully do not care of what would happens to him, he just want to kill A2, like Eve wanted to kill 2B and 9S in part 1-2.
These things is what make this game interesting even tho it's so depressing…

  2. Sooooo, let’s say hypothetically, there could be an autistic person out there, who isn’t me, who understands that gender identity, and the experience of oneself, and being, is in fact the experience of unified opposites,

An androgynous person if you will,

Is that a reasonable argument for non binary gender identity?

  3. you're making an analysis/educational video, you don't need to censor the nipples. some would think that makes it riskier, because someone had to censor them.

  4. Whenever Japanese devs create games from western (or middle eastern in this case) stories/lore, they always end up with interesting stuff (like with dark souls)

  5. I really feel as tho everyone & their mother has missed a core part of the theme of Automata.

There really is no difference between the androids and the machines: They are both Automatons.

It's purely categorical to distinguish themselves, their identity, their goals.
Adam and Eve represent a blurring of this.
They are machines shaped like people/men, (that is what an android literally is) yet because they are of the machines, they are not considered androids, nor do they consider themselves Androids.

  6. The thing that makes Yoko stand above 90% of the industry is the fact that every single thing in his games, every minute atom is placed in is game with a reason. Nothing is out of place, nothing feels like it's from another game. Every element considered, every flaw intentional placed. He melds the major forms of physical media PERFECTLY (story, visuals and audio)

  7. This is kinda wrong. There is no tradition of the original Adam being ‘androgynous’, nor of specifically androgynous beings appearing in other religions. What you mean is hermaphordidic. Which mean BOTH male and female, not neither. Adam and Eve in nier are androgynous however. Also, why do you say that they do not resemble ‘stereotypical masculine or feminine traits’? Stereotypes have nothing to do with it. You mean biological male and female traits or sex characteristics

  8. Nier Automata videos ooooh my~ thank you for this great analysis Max♥
I'd love you hearing your thoughts of Pascal and the way he(?) tried to achieve societal morality within the machine village!
(will take the opportunity to ask something about the 'stay yellow' thing. Is it referring to something you have documented in the past? Or am I supposed to try to solve this puzzle myself !)

  9. I have been looking for results of a verified scientific experiment on the replication of the primordial soup with actual life form genesis and not just theoretical, anyone found one?

  10. When it comes to the afterlife, a few things to consider would be 1) paranormal/supernatural experiences. Things moving on their own, voices speaking from thin air, apparitions being seen even by multiple people, etc, etc. 2) People who have experienced near-death experiences or were actually declared dead and miraculously came back to life. Their stories are often very interesting 3) Scientifically speaking, all energy is conserved in the universe. If our sentient consciousness is definable as some kind of energy, it feels safe to say that it's likely preserved/conserved in some manner. Another interesting quote, "If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear as it is, infinite." Potentially we really are all infinite beings, which perhaps is more overwhelming than the idea that we come to an end. Perhaps what is organic is just mathematically advanced algorithms creating what seems like "sentience" within ourselves, but actually we are more of robots than actual robots are, as we maybe connected to a network we can never disconnect from without instantaneously dying. The idea that we are nothing without "God" (just another way to refer to the network mainframe) could be 100% literal, which is why we have considered the possibility we're trapped in a matrix, but no one has ever escaped, and the idea of someone like Neo existing is just another way to help us come to terms that we're stuck here. We'll never become God (controlling the network of energy everyone is connected to whether dead or alive), but we can also never escape "God" without becoming "nothing", creating a type of panic far worse than existentialism. It feels like we exist without really existing. We're alive, but we don't feel life. That's me. That's the paranoid ass thoughts in my head. Hby?

  11. Yeah nier automata is cool but have you played Drakengard 1 and 3???

No but really, Adam and Eve are such lacking characters in comparison to Manah and Seere from drakengard 1 and Sister One and Brother One from drakengard 3. its the same concept but done much better. It's like all the thematic weight of adam and eve but ALSO actual interesting and nuanced writing that makes them feel so much more real. I love automata and it got me into the series and im forever grateful but the character writing isnt as strong as the predecessor games…

  12. As a side note. Some of you need to look up the word androgynous. I see a few comments saying they just look like anime boys. But that doesn't make them any less androgynous. I'm surprised by the lack of understanding though I guess I shouldn't be tbh.

In short. Androgyny is a combination of masculine and feminine characteristics into an ambiguous form. Simply looking from the stomach down is a clear indication of the characters (adams and eves) lack of typical male sex characteristics. Which is part of what makes the character androgynous to begin with lol. Adams hair is also more feminine then Eves as long hair typically is associated with feminity while short hair is associated with masculinity. (Most of this is a socially constructed but regarding the characters designs. They were clearly made this way for a reason)

  13. Ah yes…I wrote a 8 page essay about Nier Automata, and 1 1/2 pages of those 8 pages were purely about Adam and Eve!
Love this video! Thank you for making something about Adam and Eve, because they are not villains, and there really isn't a villain in this game!
