The problem with suggesting one bit of lore to follow is that the hobby/ table top game/lore have been around for 40-50 years and a lot of the "lost lore" is currently being penned. Horus Heresy line of books from The Black Library, which consists of approximately 52 books on it's own; not including Horus's assault on Terra which is currently up to book 4 and i think at least 3 or 4 more are supposed to come (maybe more). Then there is the Primarch line, with one to each primarch that hadn't been expunged by the Emperor, should only number 18 but theyre are a couple extra books thrown in, compilations of short stories, the Custodes, Malcador…. (they are only just over halfway with this line, these are quick reads however)
So in summation, there is TOO much to sift through .and understand in a comment or 30 minute video. However, a YouTube video is out there, well a collection of 5 that will give you a little peak of what a Space Marine is actually like, Space Marines are the Astartes (A*star*tees) and coincidentally you can search Astartes on YouTube and should bring up his page. There's isn't any dialogue and in total the videos are about 10 minutes all together.
(Little bonus, there is an inquisitor in it as well to show you a tiny bit of what the inquisition does)
More on this would take forever to talk about, however a single character to follow is kind of hard to do as the are so many you could.
My personal suggestion is to read the Gaunts Ghosts story line by Dan Abnett, he is a wonderful author and someone that gives good names to follow.
Inquisition is alikened to the secret police. They don't answer, but only to themselves.
Hey, for all intents and purposes…I love that you actually TRY to understand it. This seems miles ahead of the usual YouTube reaction bs…
Well, seeing a non gamer reviewing and reacting to games is why I'm here. I appreciate your honesty. The youtube reviewers I find that "like everything unconditionally" don't interest me much and don't question things. You're right about the Inquisition. If they're so pivotal and "the last word" in everything… How come they're never part of any "solutions?" to all of these problems? Hmmmm? Warhammer is a deep rabbit hole indeed. Love the reaction!
An SJW learning about warhammer XD
Yeah, getting into 40k can be like jumping into the deep end of the pool while only barely knowing how to swim. It's a massive amount of info to look at and between that and the grimdarkness of a lot of it can be really intimidating to get into. However, some of the best ways to get into it is to either pick a faction that stands out to you and learn more about it before branching out or to dive into some of the fan created works such as the memes, short stories, or parodies to learn more about the universe of 40K while also having a laugh. It's also completely fine if you find yourself not liking certain parts of 40k and you are 100% free to ignore those parts, but so long you are enjoying however you are trying to get into the hobby that all that really matters.
both WarCraft and StarCraft also may never exist if there wasn't Warhammer :3
40k summed up.
Space jesus went and spread his space jesus teachings. Half his sons said no thank you space jesus and turned on him. For over 10,000 years space jesus has been crippled on life support while aliens/demons and ex space jesus followers try to kill what is left of the space jesus empire
Watch, russianbadger videos on 40k, it is to do with video games, there is only two, and he just makes the universe funny.
Try baldermorts guide to warhammer itās much better for new comers g trust me lol
Get into DND has where you can create your own stories
Correct. In 40k there is no protagonist. The Imperium is a terrible, horrific society to live in. And yet it is still better than the alternative. 40k is a lore of accepting bad to prevent even worse.
And yet, as the guy in the video said, the lore is surprisingly addictive in its utterly absurd extremes. Read a copy of The Imperial Guardsman's Primer and you find yourself laughing at how ridiculous it is one second, and reciting benedictions to our God Emperor the next.
The one that explains factions by bricky also explains the story, but is super entertaining and funny, I highly recommend it
I would recommend Imperium of Man by the Templin Institute. Amazing explanation of the human sife of 40k in a clear video
there are diffrient stories in warhammer 40k with many characters and protagonists, but the world is so huge that you can't just say "this is the hero" only like The emperor kinda fits that category
40k is a grimdark universe, and by the sounds of things I don't think you will like it. That being said I have 3 books that will get you a firm start to the journey. First book Horus Rising, second False Gods and lastly Galaxy in flames those 3 books are the beginning of the Horus Heresy series and you might find it easier to connect with them more than the games.
However if you don't want to read them because like me you are incapable of pronouncing old Latin words and names then fear not all 3 of those books are in audio form on audible.
tries to understand 40k
Don't. Don't do that to yourself. Just learn as you go and take things for granted. It's too big a universe compared to something like Star Trek or Star Wars to wrap your head around without years of full immersion in the lore.
Protagonist ? What in the Emperor's golden loo door is that?
If you whant a protagonist read something about Fabius Bile
More warhammer
Think of every faction as different ideals of humanity, the big appeal i personally have with 40k is no one fully good, every faction does some evil and there are no real main protagonists unless u read the books than you get some really interesting stuff. If anything i would just enjoy some of the orks since they are a race that literally just believe in something so hard it becomes real like they believe in painting something red makes it go faster than it actually does. Seriously their ships are basically metal with duct tape they are the best meme faction i have ever heard of i love them so much.
Honestly to begin to scratch the surface of the 40K universe you would have to watch 10 or so of these videos to get the basics down before learning more.
"Future hellscape" is a good choice of words
12:19 They're still relatively normal, albeit some people have cybernetic body parts now, but they're still largely the same, apart from a few species of abhumans, like ratlings, ogryns, beastmen, felinids, squats, and some others, but they're tolerated.
12:32 Yep, that's the Mechanicus, they like cybernetic, nearly robotic people, you could have guys with just a few cybernetic implants, like a couple extra robot arms or a cybernetic eye, and it gets more robotic until you've got guys that are more machine than man, one guy has like twenty robot arms, and looks like a weird robot dinosaur of a man, he still retains most of his facial features, and a normal arm, but that's about it, and more implants generally means more age and high rank.
12:51 It's High Gothic, basically Latin.
13:01 It's more like a hierarchy or a chain of command.
13:22 This is a Titan, a giant machine of war for the Adeptus Mechanicus. This specific model is a Warhound class scout Titan, it's about twenty meters tall, and it's one of the smallest, the largest of the Titans are about 150 meters tall.
13:46 Yep, and she is not a member of the Mechanicus, she is a living saint, basically a former member of the Ecclessiarchy, the Imperial Church, that returned from death.
16:13 This is not Khorne himself, it's a Bloodletter, a lesser daemon of Khorne.
16:35 Again not Nurgle, this is a plague marine, basically a Space Marine that fell to Nurgle and is now heavily corrupted.
17:14 So is basically anyone who decides to play a Slannesh army. "Her" followers enjoy hedonism, self pleasure, and they all have severe cases of masochism, and will become ever more deprived the longer they worship Slannesh.
21:22 With humanity, you wouldn't believe how hard that is, more power means more control and many people in the Imperium are megalomaniacs, even members of the same factions within larger factions don't get along, even Imperial Guard regiments from different worlds, like Krieg and any other world, need to send liasons between each other to ensure that there aren't any "accidents" and that looting between regiments doesn't happen, also the Sisters of Battle, basically nuns with guns, they can't deploy convents from different Orders together due to them having different ideas about the God Emperor.
21:25 As far as 40k goes, no enemies would be able to reach Terra without massive loses to their entire race, seeing as the Imperium would send entire Battlefleets to slow them down in the void, and would deploy massive amounts of Imperial Guard regiments to the worlds on their path so that each planet the foe takes will be covered in their dead, unless it's Tyranids as they'll eat the planets down to the bedrock while harvesting the planet.
22:17 Because they spawned Slannesh through having planet wide murder orgies that would make the streets of their cities flow with blood, drugs, alcohol, corpses, and sexual fluids, about 95% of their entire species died in their empire and the remainder lived in massive ships called Craftworlds, which have now been modified to be the size of continents.
22:47 If the Imperium decides to even launch a single crusade to beat the T'au, these xenos wouldn't stand a chance, they only have an empire of a hundred star systems, the Imperium is a milliion systems strong.
26:21 Because even on a single world there could be tens of billions of people, and also human rights aren't a thing, but the Imperium is always so close to collapse that they don't really have time to worry about that when they have to worry about fighting a ton of xenos empires, pirates, traitors, heretics, and even their own administration.
Whatch the Astarte fan made videos. They are short and great.
Just Watch Imperium of Mankind Templin Institute
Hey at least you gave it a second chance. Highly recommend looking into Commander Dante and his sacrifices to humanity. Or the tragedy of Magnus the Red.
wait you hand paint these, peers over at 10000 point space marine army and 5000 point tau army all painted questions life
Great first reaction to 40k! I've been seriously into 40k for 2 decades now and still don't get everything so your: "I'm confused" statement is pretty much a universal feeling.
If you want to see the true horror of the fall of humanity, I would recommend checking out a video on the Death Korps of Krieg.
There are also more comedic characters that I think you might enjoy and I would personally recommend Ciaphus Cain and his stories.
"I don't wanna know factions i wanna know the hole thing" that, is the most insane thing I've ever heard someone looking into Warhammer 40k.
The about of information that'll be thrown at you would be unthinkable. The space marines alone is a loaded gun because you'd need to learn ever chapter, their weapons, armor, the gene seed, what Primarch they belong to, what a Primarch is, who the God-Emperor is etc.
And that's not even looking at the rest of the Imperiums as a whole yet and we still have the Orks, Eldar, Chaos, Tau and Necrons to look at, AND all the "minor" factions within factions.
I don't know what the backlash was in the last video was about but i can some what understand why, over the last few maybe more the Warhammer 40k franchise has caught the attention of people that want to come into the community and change it not for the betterment of the franchise but for their personal beliefs. For example Female Space Marines, the lore is that the God-Emperor created 20 sons (Primarchs) and from their gene seed (a set of enhanced organs/implants) make the space marines. To make space marines we need recuits BUT online the strongest both body and mind (less than 5% of population) soooo many of these recruits die in trials that only a hand few remain. The God-Emperor's reasoning for only using males for space marines is the cold logical results that males have "better" survival rate then females and it allows him to control how many space marines there are than allowing femals to maybe by a defective gene seed give birth to what are meta humans to maybe rebel against him. Its also been supported by many in universe characters different reasons why this is preferable like brotherly comradely, less emotional in making vital decisions, control of numbers etc.
Leutin09 is a good choice if you want an informative introduction to Warhammer 40K. If you want something more entertaining, then watch this.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uqDD4Byd_00&t=77s
In my opinion there's mainly two ways of enjoying 40k lore:
1: Reading up on Space Marines and Imperium and getting into it and taking it super seriously.
2: Just enjoying the stark contrast between the Grimdark overall aesthetic and the glorious moments of absolute unadulterated goofieness that come about whenever the Orkz come on stage.
It should be noted that there's also Warhammer Fantasy which, as the name implies, is more of a high fantasy setting rather than science fiction (in fact, it is the reason why Warcraft exists. Blizzard originally were making a Warhammer game but got in an argument with Games Workshop and lost the licensing rights, so they basically made their own fantasy universe with the stuff they had already programmed for Warhammer).
Just like 40k it is more of an overall setting that houses a multitude of different stories and characters without there being one strict protagonist, but I think it's arguably a bit easier to understand and a little less toxic overall.
Luetin09 is quite probably the best video source ot Warhammer 40K lore you could have found.
Imperial Guard (Astra Militarum) – Regular Army
Adeptus Astartes (Space Marines) – Super soldiers
Inquisition – CIA and FBI, with a hint of religious fanaticism and paranoia
Emperor – President except has no political use
Sisters of Battle – Nuns with guns (not hyperbole)
Grey Knights – Anti-Demon Space Marines
Aeeptus Mechanicus – Research and Development but the only research and development made is turning you into a robot that can feel everything but you are helpless to do anything and they are possibly sexually aroused by machines
Custodes – Super soldiers that are more super soldier than space marines who are basically useless because they guard the emperor on his throne waiting for someone to come to them while everyone else dies.
Primarchs – big unga bunga chads that make a space marine look like a toddler and have tactical and strategic minds that put real world war hero generals to shame
Titans – big fuck off robots
Dreadnoughts – your coffin except your coffin has arms and legs and is armed with a minigun
Commissars – whats that you wish to retreat?
loads bolter with malicious intentThe best part of 40k is the absence of a protagonist. In any story you fall in love with a character and follow him/her during the story. In 40k everey race can be see as the protagonist or the good guys. Take the necron, everyone can agree than big skeleton robots with murdering intent are bad but they are an ancient race who was betrayed by they're gods and because of this they are immortal machine with no soul. Aside of that choose a race and start read some story. There are good characters there you can love and follow. Avoid slaanesh and drukhari cause they are both obsessed with torture. Start some easy like the Tau for beginning. Then embrace the emperor's light and leave the xeno's way.
A*star*tes the tes is pronounced like tea's
There are characters with entire stories around them, but they are the protagonists of their own life, rather than the galaxy, and I donāt think a single one of them doesnāt have some tragic end or tragic existence
Hm, if you want a trailer with a story, first look for āwarhhamer 40k new edition trailerā, then try any of Baldemortās video (his channelās logo looks like a skinhead, but he if far from being one), he almost always start his videos with a narration of something. Alternatively, google for images of āservo skull (WH40K)ā and āAdeptas Sororitasā, then look on youtube for ābetween the lines – warhammer 40,000 fan audio: a sisters of battle, shrine world, servo skull storyā from the channel peranine. This last one is an audiobook… think of it like a radio program. Anyway, start by the ānew edition trailerā
Careful once you start warhammer your going to get sucked in
Kinda sad that you are not going to take part in Warhammer but doesnāt mean Iām gonna stop watching this channelš„šÆš„
Painting miniatures helped me a lot when I first got sober. For me they're well worth the money for how much enjoyment I get. I still won't be buying one of those titans off of forgeworld that he mentioned, though. The lore is excellent the more you get into it. There's a prevailing sense of paradise lost, and the dream of what humanity could have achieved. Then it all went wrong. Welcome to the Grimdark! =)
>shirt that unironically says "SJW"
That's a nope from me.
Watch the warhammer series made by Bricky.there are 2 videos
You can watch the factions one from Bricky. It's a good start at the lore since he explains a lot of the main events a little more lightly so he doesn't go too deep to confuse new people. Luetin channel is pretty much heavy lore that will get average warhammer fans a little confused.
