Oblivion Is Still Excellent 15 Years Later

Should you play The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion in 2021? Jake Dekker revisits Bethesda’s classic to see how it holds up 15 years later.

You don’t have to look hard to find Oblivion’s blemishes, but if you can look past them there is an imaginative, ambitious fantasy adventure that, in many ways, Bethesda hasn’t been able to replicate since. The Elder Scrolls has been around since 1994. However, it didn’t stake its claim in the console space until 2002 with The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. Morrowind had a lot of firsts for the series. Most notably, it was the first fully 3D mainline Elder Scrolls game.

Morrowind laid the groundwork for Oblivion, and eventually Skyrim. In this video, Jake revisits Oblivion for its 15th anniversary in order to see what made it so special. From the awkward voice acting to the incredible quests, Oblivion had is still a memorable experience.

Oblivion originally came out for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC back in 2006, but it’s currently available on Xbox Game Pass for subscribers.

  1. My best moments of oblivion, is seeing armor you want, then taking that armor that you want!…. Sometimes it worked out the first time then again you might have to change up your strategy to get 👍🏾😁

  2. The fact that you ARENT the chosen one is a big reason why I liked oblivion’s narrative over Skyrim’s.

In Skyrim you are the chosen one but the world rarely reacts to it. In oblivion you become the champion of Cyrodil, citizens and guards alike address you as such, and the city of Bravil builds a fucking STATUE of your character!! How cool is that??

  3. I remember the very first time I played this back when I was 11, I’m 26 now and to this day haven’t felt the same feeling towards a game as I did towards oblivion. I’ve never been the type of guy to finish a game and replay multiple times over. No word of a lie, I have finished oblivion 20-30 times.

  4. The fact you don't mention the Shivering Isles DLC hurts my soul! The music in Oblivion was way better than Skyrim, but Skyrim wins generally on everything else because of what they learned with Morrowind, and Oblivion.

  5. Morrowind synonymous with CTD (crash-to-desktop). Oblivion proved that poorly optimized memory management could bring the most powerful gaming rigs to their knees. Skyrim…thank goodness for console commands to close out busted quests. Bethesda, the all time champion at putting out half-baked buggy games and then letting the modding community fix it.

  6. 15 years???

This game is eternal. It "Is" my favorite RPG & will remain forever.

Oblivion, Skyrim, Baldur's gate, Dragon age origins & Divinity series are some of the games which can't be replaced ever.

  7. What I want for Elder Scrolls 6: The complexity of the world design and lore from Morrowind, the Quest design from Oblivion and the Combat and general technical improvements from Skyrim.

  9. Two things. First, your character is somewhat of a "chosen one" as the Emperor had a premonition you would be important. The character is also referenced as The Hero of Kvatch and The Champion if I'm not mistaken.
Secondly, as a Brit, I must ask you to kindly not use the term "mad lad" again, in any context.
