  1. Pathfinder:Kingmaker is one of my favorite rpgs of the last years. Was patient enough to only really start playing it once they patched most issues. I guess I will use the same approach here.

  2. Pathfinder: Kingmaker was really good, but the timers for the Kingdom management, combined with the painfully slow travel between locations on the world map, were really annoying. Hopefully Wrath of the Righteous will avoid those and just give us solid RPG gameplay. I'm looking forward to it, but will probably wait until a year or so after release!

  3. If people are looking for a Baldur's Gate-like, there no question, Baldur's Gate 3 is not a Baldur's Gate-like while Pathfinder is.
If people are looking for the Forgotten Realms, then it'll be Baldur's Gate 3 over Pathfinder (even though the writing quality of Larian is not that great anymore, I prefered Divine Divinity by far where the lore was interesting regarding the setting of the events)
If people are looking for good RP mechanics, Pathfinder has been better than Original Sin. Plenty of "invisible" checks, plenty of choices that are connected to your class, to your alignment,… Larian is not very good at RP, and I prefered when they were doing Diablo-like games.

Both games will be good, but I'm more in favor of Pathfinder.
And anyway, I will never pay the full price for this kind of games that won't be complete at their release (I anticipate some DLC and some mod implementation at one point + bug fixes), and I only buy finished products.

  4. For any of the people who remember and are concerned about this game being as buggy at launch like Pathfinder: Kingmaker was, i am a backer of this new game, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, and have been playing since the Alpha and now the Beta and i can tell you that the Alpha was more polished than Pathfinder: Kingmaker was at launch. Owlcat is taking far more care this time around to ensure a smooth launch, and it really shows already. So i think you can all set your minds at ease as i think this game is really shaping up a LOT better than the previous Pathfinder game.

  5. I legit broke the beta so hard that I went back in time with my party to before the demons attacked, met my past self who I could have slide along the ground and somehow already had the light of heaven and was unable to use it. I had him throw a knife at the target which caused an infinite loading screen.

  6. Firstly one must take things into perspective, Pathfinder Kingmaker was made by a small studio on Kickstarter with very little backing and it was in my eyes the spiritual successor to Baldurs Gate 1 and 2. Yes it had bugs on launch, but these were fixed with later patches. I played the later versions and it is by far above any of Larian Studio games in terms of depth, story writing, characters, music and setting. With over 4 times the backing for the Wrath of the Righteous sequel I am convinced they will learn from past mistakes and release a relatively bug free game.

As for Baldurs Gate 3 ask yourself why you would be interested in buying it. If you like DnD, Divinity games or Larian as a developer (all respectable reasons), that game will no doubt be very good as a stand alone title. If however like me you love the legacy of the original Baldurs Gate 1 and 2 then this game will be a huge disappointment unlike the Pathfinder games. Before you say anything, no its not because of the new game engine nor the fact that it is truer to the rules of turn based tabletop DnD Forgotten Realms.

    1. Firstly and most importantly the immersion and FEEL of BG3 is NOTHING like Baldurs Gate. Pathfinder 1 and 2 by Owlcat are.
What made Baldurs Gate unique and good was a gritty realistic non linear deep well written story revolving around the evolving Bhaalspawn saga and characters with often unexpected interaction, banter and believable romance variants between party members. The writing, obnoxious characters and variety of encounters made by Larian are just not true to those games. I dislike most of the characters that can join you in Baldurs Gate 3 with obvious woke politics being forced on you once again, polyamorous characters of various pc orientations … barf. The females are comprised of one arrogant dismissive Gythyanki female without a nose resembling skeletor from Masters of the Universe and one human/elf looking one who belittles the "male" player character at every turn which leaves you with no attractive options bar a non-straight vampire who keeps hitting on you and sucking your blood. In other words I do not care at all for the characters which for me is the most important part of an RPG along with the story. Pathfinder Kingmaker excels in this like BG and had a practically open book policiy for Chris Avalone to do his magic.

    2. The SETTING.
BG3 just doesn't compare thus far, yes its early access but Act 1 is the most depressing and limited set of starting areas e.g. Shattered Sanctum, Defiled Temple, a long arid road, wetlands, dank crypt, tunnels, blighted village, ravaged beach, grove etc etc. In BG1 you started in Candle Keep and travelled all around the sword coast multiple Towns, Woods, Mountains, coastline, Mines, Bandit Camps, Fortresses, Ruins and Baldurs Gate City. It was huge and varied. BG2 had most of what was offered in the first game albeit further south on the Faerun map it started with you as a prisoner in Atkatla city later adding an Elven City, spellhold, an underwater realm, a ship and pirate isle, The Underdark with Illithid, Dueregar, Beholder lairs and an entire Drow City, you could manage your own domain depending on class (castle, tower, grove), the demonic plane and climaxes with you being the new god of Murders. It had it all. Once again I know its early access but what is on offer so far is supposedly Wilderness, some Underdark, obviously Baldurs Gate in Act 2 and some ending areas in the final Act/s. I believe there are 3 Acts but just based on Act I in early access I am not amused. Pathfinder Kingmaker on the other hand was huge in scope and in the same vein as BG it had a bit of everything including managing your own kingdom.

    3. Real Time With Pause which has already been mentioned by many other youtubers is not even present in BG3 and instead we are subjected to sloooow Turn Based combat unlike Pathfinder which stays true to RTWP. For me it is a footnote but a point to be mentioned nonetheless. Larian chose Turn Based to appease Wizards of the Coast, DnD fans and to hold on the Divinity engine model track record. They could have easily implemented a RTWP option for fans of the originals for continuity but they ignored that part of the fanbase completely. Saying that however, the combat comes secondary for me in an RPG (I do not like Action RPG variants for that reason). Knights of the Old Republic for example had very mediocre combat with RTWP but the story and characters and setting made it one of the best RPGs out there. By taking this option the game combat is sloooow and not in a good way. Again Pathfinder comes out on top.

So in summary if you like the idea of Baldurs Gate 3 because it is made by Larian, if you love DnD and want something set in Forgotten Realms with a close representation of the tabletop rules and mechanics, or if you simply want a good stand alone RPG, then that is the game for you. If you however like me, are a real fan of Baldurs Gate 1 and 2 and what made those games unique because of the style of writing, the characters, the variety of locations and quests and even RTWP over Turn Based then wait for Pathfinder WotR.

My opinion is that Larian has a very different style of doing things and are not the right studio for Baldurs Gate imho. DnD based games they can do, but not Baldurs Gate, it should have
been licensed to Owlcat or Obsidian studios.
