Nice one John. I have the original in well played vg+ all round condition plus a recent reissue. Have to say it sounds much better today than then, as far as I'm concerned.
I'm not a big fan of this album although I like it more the "Umma Gumma". The title track does not impress me, I got the feeling they didn't know what to do with the orchestra. For a better example listen to 'Salisbury' by Uriah Heep, they did it right. I like the 3 tracks by Waters, Wright and Gilmour, that's it.
Fat Old Sun is one of the most atmospheric pieces of music ever created. The solo and the melody make you feel undescribable emotions. I always seem somewhat nostalgic. The music, cover and the name are all connected.
Atom Heart Mother is so mystical and beautiful. The side 1 is epic and the vocal melodies in there middle are ancient and some experimenting there also with the rhythmic trickery. It's my third favorite PF album or maybe 4th on par with Meddle and after them comes DSOTM not before. Very nice tunes from each composer on the side 2 and I like Richard Wright's piece best, it continues the theme from side 1 somehow I think with the pompous brass section and is very fine tune. And the story is good too. At least Ron Geesin had his name on the song credits if not elsewhere. Thank you for your presentation and acknowledging.
My favorite, by just a little bit but my favorite. Also the first album I bought back in 1980. If memory serves me well there are 29 cows in the inner photo! Good review!
My second favourite PF album. The first four songs are amazing. Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast isn't as good, but the rest of the album certainly makes up for it.
I really want to love this album but I don't. The title track and Alan's breakfast don't do it for me. But if we take If and fat old sun and put them on meddle instead of San Tropez and Seamus, then we have an imaginary classic album that rivals any of Floyd's best albums.
I'm a big fan of this album. I don't think Pink Floyd were particulary hippies but it is a piece of music very much of the period. Even Roger Waters was a bit airy and flowery back then, later he is all about harsh reality.
What is the white dot on Paul McCartney's forehead on the picture in the background? Is it the shapeshifting reptilian William Campbell revealing himself?
Sorry to have to go against the grain of comments here but I thought the album was very weak (I have the original vinyl). In historical hindsight though I was lucky to see PF perform this live at a free concert in Hyde Park (think it was one of the last free Hyde Park concerts), but unfortunately I began to lose interest in the band after this album and never bought any of their recordings again – just liked the occasional track but didn't feel the urge to layout the cash to buy them. Each to their own though!
Floyd's last 'psychedelic" album. With the follow up Meddle, there was a move towards more conceptual and real themes, but this is still not a bad album.
Its not one of my favourite albums from Pink floyd, but its okay, i think.

With their cow photos I think PF were trying to dispel that they were drug orientated. But the cows are cute

Thank you for your ultimate sacrifice, cows. Goodnight John.
A top 10 album cover for me, love the inner gatefold picture.

Is that you with Paul McCartney in the photo behind you John?

This was the first Floyd album I got in 1972. Loved it ever since.

Nice review, John. I've always really enjoyed Atom Heart Mother, one of my favorites of theirs from this period.
Great review John. Atom Heart Mother is a great album, especially 'If' which is a lovely song.
Nooooo…..the front is the front! It's perfect!!
I think the album cover on Atom Heart Mother is udderly fantastic!
Do you listen on speakers or headphones to review? And have you ever mentioned what your set up is?
Hi John, could you add the title of the Hipgnosis book you mentioned? I’ve been looking for a recommendation. Thanks
5 . Alan’s Phycidellic Breakfast
4 . If
3 . Summer 68
2 . Fat Old Sun
1 . Atom Heart Mother
I have this album in both stereo and quad versions and the latter is excellent sounding, even on stereo equipment (I don't have a Quad player).
