PlayStation's Focus on Too Big to Fail Games Is Concerning

With a recent report from Bloomberg shedding light on potential upheaval among Sony’s first-party studios, and a series of projects that have either switched hands, not moved forward, or else changed the potential lineup of PS4 and PS5 games, IGN’s Jonathon Dornbush breaks down why what we’ve learned is a concerning focus on only the games that are too big to fail. With the word of an alleged The Last of Us remake shifting studios, Days Gone 2 reportedly not moving forward, and more, we discuss whether Sony’s reported approach may be at the cost of risk and innovation that has been so key to Sony’s legacy.

  1. This guy needs to chill out for fuck sake. Returnal, destruction all stars are new IP’s . That is within 6 months of ps5 launch. There will be new ip’s down the road along with focus on blockbuster IP’s. They’re restructing their studios to make sure which studios focus on new IP or extending the hit franchises

  2. Gamers and the games media are hypocrites to me
Everyone expects sony to put out big blockbuster games and praise them for it….
Everyone was dissapointed with sony's last state of play. U know why? Because there was no horizon or god of war trailer in it….and now one person writes a report about its focus on AAA games
And people are predicting sony's future and how its going to fail…and yes i dont agree with some of the decisions sony has made this gen ..and the tlou remake
But we have to wait atleast a year to see where they are headed ..and not rely on persons report…

  3. Yeah Sony's getting a bit to cocky and they feel like they have to show their class and stand aside . Not attending E3 again and they want to just focus on tripla A games . What pissed me off is that they're removing the community feature. They're loosing their mark but i hope they show me im wrong .

  4. Great video, it almost perfectly describes what im feeling right now in regards to Playstation when it comes to the games( I have other issues too like the crappy store and firmware related stuff). But when someone ask me why i'm concerned about the direction Playstation is seemingly accelerating towards, im going to show them this. I hope my concerns prove to be wrong but that's what im feeling right now.

  6. People panicking over how Day’s Gone 2 didn’t get approved like they were in the room to hear the pitch and it was the best thing since sliced bread. Instead of hyperbolic hysteria why don’t people actually go and listen to Jeff Ross ex-Bend directors recent interview if they are genuinely interested in this. Jeff had nothing but positivity about the hands-off way Sony deal with first party studios and set the record straight on a lot of the speculation raised by Jason Schreier’s recent article.

  7. What if Sony said "we are now putting big budget games on the backburner for AA and smaller indie experiences" – everyone would flip their lid and shit on Sony. Damned if you do, damned if you dont.

Yea Days Gone 2 not going ahead sucks more than anything, but why are we not acknowledging the fact that Bend have a new AAA game in the works (could very well be Days gone 2 still, most likely a new IP). Evan wells has just spoken about how ND have the creative freedom to choose their own games to develop. Sont London are now working on a AAA ps5 game and on Sunday Jeff Ross also praised Sony for the creative freedom afforded to bend in an interview with jaffe. the narrative that Sony dictates what each dev needs to make is unfounded and contradicts what i am seeing and hearing from Sony 1st party studios. The question is, who do you believe? jason Schreir or the Sony devs themselves? Bloomberg article was concerning on a surface level without context, but it's pretty clear there are inaccuracies, contradictions and exaggeration in there. Can we at least acknowledge that before we start with the Doom and Gloom takes?.

Also dont act like you are innocent IGN, you guys completely panned Day Gone and no doubt contributed to this DG 2 cancellation imo. IGN and Gamespot have mass reach, and frankly both outlets produced shockingly low quality reviews for Days Gone (focusing on skin colour, and gender of characters as negatives) which no doubt had an impact on metacritic and general perception (With these 2 sites having more "weight" in the metacritic average). it's very ironic then that you would be "concerned" about Days Gone 2 not going ahead after Lucy O Brien brushed the game aside and threw it out like it was garbage day.

  8. Lol. What is this tool talking about? Sony has made great exclusives over the past few years – Last of Us, Horizon, god of war, spider man, death stranding, Detroit, persona ratchet and Clank, FF7 Remake.

  9. I'm perfectly fine with 1st party games being of the blockbuster persuasion. As long as they're good and entertaining, Sony and the studios can have my money. That's all to say, I'm not losing any sleep over this report.

  10. Honestly with all the acquisition Microsoft has had these past couple of years. If they manage to release some real bangers this gen, they might end up looking more favorable than Sony. Also their games being on XCloud and Gamepass means they wont be locked behind their consoles even.

  13. Their biggest strength was variety. I don't like where this is going. Competitors could exploit this if Sony doesn't change tracks soon.
People might start loosing interest if they keep seeing the same game get washed and thrown back at us. Other games like motorstorm series and probably mgs ( rip both ) are something that would get the hype , not the remake of a remaster

  14. The only reason those games are hits is because most of the gaming media and critics are playstation fanboys. In other words they are biased toward sony playstation.
I’ve played most of the ps4 heavy hitters TLOU, UC4, Spiderman, GOW and HZD and out of those games GOW and Spiderman are the standouts. The other games on the list are average. The gameplay that is. Good stories and production values but the most important part of a game the GAMEPLAY is average at best. Gears is still the benchmark 3rd person cover shooter in the industry. The verses multiplayer that is. The campaign is decent but it’s the multiplayer where it shines. Playstation doesn’t have an answer to Gears. Playstation also doesn’t have an exclusive FPS that can touch Halo and Forza has had the driving crown for years now. Oh and ps exclusives are not too big to fail and are certainly not guaranteed to be smash hits.

  15. This fixation with interactive movies that are bereft of gameplay will bite Sony in the butt. You can’t just throw Japanese fans under the bus and not pay the price, no matter how many pretentious Western Ponies hop on the bandwagon.

  16. Oh stop being so dramatic, this year we have destruction all stars, Sackboy, Returnal, astrobot, all aa games, that's so far, I'm sure there's more to come. All this doom n gloom is not necessary at all. Have faith in Sony, even when not at full throttle, they always come good. I'd reserve judgement until their summer event at least, there's so much unannounced games still to come. I honestly believe they're keeping some heavy hitters to announce, along with some smaller aa games. We also know they looking to 'counterpunch' gamepass, this can't be done immediately, let's wait n see what they have up their sleeve. With psvr2 coming, and talk of backwards compatibility replacing the old store, there's still lots to hear and get excited about

  17. Ps4 was a great generation for first party games was like the ps2 era to me, but now I don’t know what Sony is doing lately their starting to feel like WB they have all this property an IP and no one is doing anything with it. Or your studios are being formed into mega studios by that lose their identity..aka rockstar games, BioWare or DIce

  18. What role do you think is a publisher like Annapurna interactive playing in this? It feels like a lot of those innovative, artistic games from independent developers like Giant Sparrow or thatgamecompany for example, who in the past produced exclusives or timed exclusives for Sony, nowadays just have other, more attractive ways to get their games published, than to tie themselves to just one system.
