Predicting Video Game Prices After the Great Bubble -Will it pop or slowly deflate? | Retronomics

Video game prices are at their highest since pricecharting started showing historical data. We are in a pricing bubble but the question remains; will game prices bottom out or is this just the calm before prices really get out of control?
This video is a little bit different – no fancy graphics, just a discussion video.

  1. This video is a bit more relaxed. Let me know if you like this type of format because I want to put out more videos but keeping the level of quality of my "normal" retronomics series is unsustainable. Don't worry, those will still have the same quality, I just want to maintain a steady stream of content and these videos can help me do that.

  2. I think with the coming monthly tax credits about to hit people in July the bubble is going to get a little bigger before it pops – i've started to sell off a few things here and there – nothing i'm going to re-buy.

Good video – Love the Retro-nomics!

  3. I agree with what you say will happen. I feel like the best thing to do is just to wait until June or July. I believe that during the 2nd half of this year prices will go down on many games but they still will not be what they were in late 2019 or earlier.

  4. I don't think the prices will drop that soon. It may gradually go down, but by 5 years or less, it should be where it was before. People will lose interest and sell off everything that didn't really have an interest prior to the pandemic. The sad part is that they probably paid an insane amount and will think it's still worth what they paid or more.

  5. I like the relaxed format, for sure. I agree that things are cooling off. I think a major factor is that non-collectors (and the ones who don’t sell professionally) are figuring out that this is a market worth selling into, thus infusing the market with lots of new copies of these games. I think it will probably drop faster than we think. I’d be curious to know what things look like at the end of July.

  6. I wish I picked up devils third when It was still a $50 game . It’s so obscene . If I really feel I have to play it at least I can buy it digitally still. I really like you doing more relaxed videos like this . Keep up the great work!

  7. I see the situation like this: If there are people out there that are willing to pay whatever inflated prices certain games go for, then I don't see the market coming down a whole lot anytime soon- especially for the PS Vita library! Like with many other consumer products, once prices inflate they don't seem to ever come down to the level that they were before the price hike. With the stimulus checks mostly spent and the return to a somewhat normal life post-pandemic, I have seen many items still selling for a premium. An example of this, while not pertaining to video games specifically, is with the vintage toy market; I just recently saw two different Ebay auctions end just shy of $1K each for a certain G.I. Joe vehicle that rarely ever sees listings… and neither one were complete or in overall great shape! Of course, scarcity may have played a factor in that one, however that particular toy has been rare for many years now, and the few listings I had seen pre-pandemic were not nearly close to that in the condition these two were sold as! I haven't really checked on any retro game prices per se, but I would imagine that this trend will hold true in that area too~ I'm just SO glad I was able to get to multiple GameStops and thrift stores before COVID-19 hit and get some of the deals I got- it would cost me a small fortune to obtain some of the games I got, especially those GameCube titles! 😮

  8. I'll give you a free video idea: OG and 360 Xbox games in relation to Series S/X backwards compat announcements.
I for example noticed Panzer Dragoon ORTA dropping in price after being added to Xbox Game Pass and being digitally available for 9.99 !
