We’re closing out the week with episode 78 of Today’s News Tonight, in which Derrick, Ash, and Steve discuss a poorly-worded-at-best, deeply-offensive-at-worst trophy/achievement in NieR: Replicant, the seemingly intentional, gradual return of PS3 game patches, Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis getting a simultaneous June release worldwide (!), Super Nintendo World (and Universal Studios Japan at large) closing due to a COVID surge just one month after reopening, the Rockman.EXE Sound Box’s sudden digital release potentially pointing to something more, Civilization VI’s latest and final patch enabling the ability to pet dogs, CD Projekt Red’s latest sales data, and more!

Timestamps:
0:00 – Intro
6:32 – NieR Replicant’s “Daredevil” trophy is utterly tone-deaf and poorly-worded at best, and virulently transphobic at worst… but which is it, and what happened here?
16:21 – Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis has been dated for a June worldwide release
28:14 – Some (but not all) PS3 game patches are slowly becoming available again, including those for high-profile titles like Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Online Edition and Tekken Tag Tournament 2
31:01 – New CD Projekt Red sales data indicates Cyberpunk 2077 sold 13.7 million copies by the end of 2020 despite its problems; new-gen console versions of it and The Witcher III are scheduled for the second half of 2021
37:18 – The next Monster Hunter digital event, featuring Monster Hunter Stories 2 AND Monster Hunter Rise, has been scheduled for April 27th at 7am Pacific
41:41 – Judgment countdown website teases an announcement on May 7th (is it Judgment 2? Yeah, it’s probably Judgment 2)
49:20 – Super Nintendo World and Universal Studios Japan at large have closed just a month after (re)opening due to a surge in COVID-19 cases
55:17 – The latest Civilization VI patch brings with it, among other things, the single most important feature possible: the ability to pet the dog
58:03 – The Rockman.EXE Sound Box, containing nearly every soundtrack in the Mega Man Battle Network series, has suddenly been made available digitally alongside another Mega Man-focused mini album; could this point to groundwork being laid for a Battle Network Legacy Collection announcement? (Maybe, but keep your hype in check)

  1. Nah , you guys are wrong on this one. The description is about Kaine not wanting you to do it, and she will murder you if you do. Relax children, it's nothing new in a Yoko Taro game.

  2. I don't believe there was any malicious intent with the Kaine achievement, but the phrasing of it as finding her "secret", especially given the current climate around trans politics and things like Florida's attempt to mandate genital inspections for children, it leaves a really, really bad taste in my mouth.

  3. Played a lot of PSO with friends on the NGC, was really excited for PSO2 when it was announced to be coming to NA, but then the wait… still feeling burnt by that whole mess… confused on how to feel about this new PSO2.

  4. The thing i hate about the achievent the most is not it itself but that onve people pointed out that its "kinda bad" that a milliom people instantky started screaming about cancel culture.

  5. I'm gonna play devils advocate and hope people dont get too angry for what I'm about to say:

I like the idea of the Daredevil achievement. And here's why:
It's the punchline of a joke, and one that is in line with Kainé's personality; similarly to 2B in Automata, if you try to upskirt her with the camera, she shoos the camera away, but while 2B was more graceful, Kaine makes an angry remark and violently kicks it away, the more you try to do it, the angrier she gets until she finally reaches the breaking point of anger and beats the sh*t out of the cameraman. THAT is when you get the achievement.
Personally, I found it funny and I know some people won't but that's humor for you, how many veteran comedians have spoken out about how hard it is to be funny nowadays with people flipping over at every little thing. Everyone who plays NieR knows Kaine is a great character and there's clearly no Ill intent towards her in the game as a whole so I hate that some people are hung up on one dumb joke. Automata had an achievement for blowing off 9S's pants and running around with his bare legs but no one is complaining about that despite him having the appearance of a teenage boy.

  6. The interesting thing about the MegaMan Battle Network Sound Box stuff is, there's actually a song missing from it. That song being the Count's battle theme from the BN6 Boktai crossover event, and it's missing from the Japanese version too. So I'm wondering if a Legacy Collection would remove the Boktai content completely (except BN4 since it's integrated into the main story).

  7. Slight clarification: the refund numbers of Cyberpunk are a tad misleading, as the returns are ONLY for games returned to people directly mailing CDPR for it.

It doesn't mention other types of returns like PS4, Xbox and Steam. Numbers may still be not quite as high, but it's such an obvious, purposeful and disingenuous spin.

  8. So the trophy is ok as long as it's not transphobic? You guys lost me there. Common trope or not, normalizing someone's genitalia as open for a peek show (regardless of what gender they are) just because someone else is feeling pervy is a gross trope I wish would die. What you guys find funny is a lifetime of catcalling, booty grabbing, and worse for others.

  9. That trophy is not Transphobic at all, it's a running gag in japanese games, it has happened to females (Nier automata) and males (death stranding), so why are trans people off the table? Is it because you're outing her? Because you're kinda not, it's an open secret. Even my trans boyfriend thinks it's ridiculous people are getting offended over this.

  10. We don’t live in a perfect world. If we lived in a world where trans people weren’t being murdered, where “trans panic” laws didn’t exist to excuse the murdering of trans people, where intersex people weren’t subject to non-consensual “corrective” genital surgery at birth, THEN the Nier achievement could be seen as “funny.”
That’s not the world we live in, though.

  11. For the Kainé story, I think the wording really is the problem rather than the trigger for the achievement- but it also may be an unfortunate coincidence.
In Automata, the game refers to peeking up 2B's skirt as "2B's secret discovered 10 times." Here, it just comes off as a weird way to word it. Even though it's a similar achievement, when it's used for Kainé in Replicant the wording of "a secret" makes it appear as if the game is specifically targeting her for being intersex. Even with the context of Automata's achevement, it's somewhat hard to completely tell if the game is treating Kainé like any other protagonist woman in a modern Yoko Taro game (with 1000% horny energy) or if it's telling players that they should be having Catherine: Full Body style jaw-drop disgust.

  12. Lord forbid we have pervy shit in games. What is this the 50ties? Stop being concerned about the woke crowd and enjoy your videogames xD Sounds a bit too much like reeeeee in here

  13. im impressed, I thought you'd go full SJW on the nier thing but you didn't. You looked at it by a lot of different directions and im happy with how you handled it. Great work!

  14. Unfortunately PSO2 NGS will still have separate servers for JP and global despite NGS launching both version simultaneously because of the fact that it's not a new game, it is just an extension of PSO2. As you mentioned in the video you'll be able to freely swap between base PSO2 and NGS from the same client. So while global has caught up to JP story and gameplay wise, JP still has many content collaborations that haven't been brought to global yet. Perhaps one day if global can get all the collaboration content and reach 100% parity with JP then maybe they can unify the servers, but I find that extremely unlikely.

  15. Being honest, if they do a battle network thing they need to do a lot because the BN 1 needs like a guide or map for better navigation on the web and practically fixing the janky gameplay of BN 4, ALSO adding the events region locked like the ones of BN 6 which were scrapped due Boktai 3 content was exclusive to Japan.

  16. Hey guys, I really love your work, it's always super cozy to hear you discuss all the news! Just one minor piece of constructive criticism: I think you should maybe adjust the audio mixing a little bit, because Ash's mic is almost always much louder than the others and Steve's is much lower. I guess you could take Derrick's mic as a reference and adjust the others to that.
Otherwise, keep up the cool stuff, thanks GVG crew 🙂

  17. Ignorant? No (the only thing that is is that article)
Should it be changed/removed? HELL NO!

I wish people stop making a mountain out of a mole hill

Us OG fans (the majority) knew for years, the minority that's taking thing too personally needs to shut up …again. 😒

You are pretty much risking life and limb since she stomps the camera in 🤣

Lollipop Chainsaw has one like this too and no one complained then
Best to keep it that way and enjoy the game.

  18. I remember the first time I explored the monastery in Fire Emblem Three Houses. There were all these adorable dogs and cats all over the place, but they were just set dressing, no interactions available. Then in the DLC, they now let you feed the dogs and cats! I love this meme, from a game design standpoint, petting dogs is such a random and unimportant feature (it's extra work on animations for no real effect on gameplay) but I love how this is the hill we have all collectively chosen to die on… I like when the internet starts going crazy over supporting cute things and not harassing celebrities or whatever.

  19. Sorry missed the mark this time with the Neir's achievement/trophy, its nothing to be out raged over, like with many other people said in the comments here, you get killed if you do it, its a game over, this "outrage" is dumb and over blown. I watched a video on how to get it and its really nothing to get outraged over
