Wait, Is Sony getting ready to surprise PlayStation players by expanding PS5 backward compatibility support to include PS3, PS2, and PS1 games? Well, a new Sony patent has ignited this exact speculation. On March 18, a new patent from Sony was published titled “Method and Apparatus for Awarding Trophies.” On the surface level, this patent isn’t very interesting, but it’s about awarding trophies for emulated games, and the only games Sony would be emulating in 2021 would be legacy games, like those on PS3, PS2, and PS1.

The reason why PS5 can’t play PS1, PS2 and PS3 is the difference of the architecture. The Xbox games have the similar architecture so it easier to have backwards compatibility. This is the same reason why you can play PS4 games on the PS5.

Crossing my fingers on this one. If it is true and if i can pop in my physical disc games from ps2 or 1 on the 5 and it plays, cool with me.
The patent is old they had this filed sense when the ps4 first launched
It would rule if all past games were compatible with new consoles but i know it will never happen completely im just worried ill lose my installed ps3 games i have installed incliding old ps1 and ps2 games when or if store shuts down

Backwards compatibility would be far too pro consumer, they'll just copy and paste their old ISOs to their store and charge you to play the old games.
