PS5 Exclusive Returnal Graphics Analysis – A Visual Showcase For Sony's New Console

We’re still very much in the early days of the ninth console generation. Over on the Xbox and PC, The Medium recently came out as a ninth-gen exclusive. While it’s a fixed-perspective title in the vein of the early survival horror games, there’s a lot to find in common: we’re seeing remarkably asset quality across the board, judicious use of ray-tracing, and a post-process pipeline that isn’t compromised by sub-native buffers and low sample counts.

Returnal (and The Medium) signpost where ninth-gen visuals are headed: we’re looking at higher-fidelity models, no-compromise texture quality, and tasteful use of ray-tracing, as we get past the “puddles everywhere!” phase.

It’s not exactly a night-and-day difference. But it’s not easy to see how well the base PlayStation 4 would run this game, and that’s a good thing: PlayStation exclusives are starting to move beyond vintage 2013 hardware.

  1. I have a PS5 and was looking forward to this until I heard it was a roguelike and prcedurally generated. Not into that at all. I was hoping just for a 3rd person shooter with sci fi story.

  2. Please stop comparing Medium to RE and Silent Hill in every sentence. Yes it has fixed camera and horror theme but gameplay is totally different, it's just a walking sim with heavy focus on story .

  3. The intro doesn't mention Hades even though it's the best recent rogue like and this games combat is so similar to that! Only thing I can think is Hades isn't on PS so let's not mention it lol

  4. Almost everything this guys said might be wrong. This won't be a native 4k 60fps game, it will be checkerboard Res. So the texture quality he's saying will be present at 30fps, not how you should play this type of game. Even last gen has great textures at 30fps. Next gen SHOULD be native 4k 60FPS with global illumination RT, what PC has for years now.

  5. Hoping this game does well. Sick of gaming just being the same style games over and over again although tbh i don't know how much further they can expand gaming as is today except for something like virtual reality which i see as having lots of potential

  6. This looks absolutely fantastic and a PS5 only game that can really showcase what the new hardware can do. The game I'm most excited for is Horizon Forbidden West. Zero Dawn is one of the best looking games of all time, I can't wait to see what Guerrilla Games does to push the envelope!

  7. This is not a triple A game. The developer is a relatively small studio consisting of about 50 to 70 people. And the budget was really low. It's a double A game but that doesn't make it bad. Just because a game has pretty graphics doesn't mean it's a triple A experience or project.

  8. No offence to women , I respect all mothers, sisters and daughters but I don’t know why we are seeing more and more games with female protagonist when the role is without a doubt suitable for a male
These roles are perfectly suitable for men naturally, playing as a female is a deal breaker for me , just see the difference between uncharted and tomb raider, What happened to the natural order, what do u guys think ?
