PS5 full backwards compatibility was hinted at in a recent patent that was filed by Sony. While patents are filed all the time and this may end up meaning nothing, the timing of it is interesting. a new report has surfaced claiming Sony plans to close the digital storefronts of the PS3, PSP, and PS Vita as soon as this Summer. These two may have no connection at all and we have no idea of this report is true or not, but it has certainly raised some concern within the gaming community for good reason.
It would be strange if Sony were to announce something like this and not offer a complete solution to their customers when it comes to their legacy library. While not something everyone cares about, it’s still important to discuss. I also talk about why I believe this highlights the continued importance of physical media.

It's hard to say if Sony really does have plans to do more when it comes to backwards compatibility with the PS5. On one hand it would make sense as PlayStation has a great library that certainly deserves to be preserved and move forward, on the other hand Jim Ryan has not been the most supportive of it and the PS4 sold over 100 million units without any form of BC. It's also worth noting that the PS5 is BC with PS4 games so for Sony and most gamers, that may be enough. So it's up in the air but hopefully if this report is true, Sony has a solution of some kind for customers who care about preserving those legacy titles.
Losing the Vita store will highly effect me bro. I buy and download so much on my Vita and PsTV monthly if not weekly. I have over 500 games digital on my Ps3, tho I barely ever be on it nowadays. It sucks to hear this claim, but time flies and hopefully they do something to merge all of them…

The sad thing is, even if you could put in your old game discs into the PS5, the PS5 does not come equipped with a CD Laser. So, you can't play any PS1 or CD-based PS2 games on it 😢

This is absolutely terrible news if true.
Even if your ps4 internal battery dies you can still download your games from the cloud right? I get that you lose the games saved inside the ps4 but your cloud account should have all your games.
Clock battery isn’t a issue just get the PS5
It was hinted in that leaked patent about 18 months ago. But this seems to be an updated patent? Good news though if it plans out. Just hoping there is some type of physical recognition system like Xbox

IF this is a thing! and im predicting Back Compat is above 90% a thing! then i have also said that a new Portable Sony device will be shown!!! But I originally guessed that this portable device would be teased and talked about AFTER PSVR2 releases and maybe AFTER or around nintendos Switch/Next gen Switch gets revealed released!!!

I dont think this is really Sonys fault if someone leaked this info! And Sony are obviously trying to figure out when to best tell everyone while transitioning everybody to a new thing and then communicating it… Theres moving parts to this obviously! If theres a NEW service or Feature they havent told anyone about… then someone leaks that eventually the old digital stores will close, then this obviously poses a problem to sony revealing new service/feature! or a time that they had in mind etc….

Just like people who think Sony are abandoning Japan! Yet Sony strengthened and acquired and inked deals with Japanese media giants in Crunchyroll/Funimation/Kadokawa and now EVO… These are all FAN driven stuff! Sony dropped big bucks to strengthen with these partners and or out right acquire them!!!
The thing i want to know is the where are the rumours coming from about sony wanting to buy squenix!!!?? this would be bigger than bethesda!!! squenix has MORE IPs!! Japanese and Western!!! that would mean Sony getting Lara Croft Tombraider as well as Uncharted!! and Deus Ex etc etc…. Right now this rumour isnt registering with me because Squenix is massive!!! But!!! Squenix would fit Sony! and the recent deals with Kadokawa etc etc too… plus FF is an anime ip thing now too FF would be the most expensive IP in Squenix folio… Most of Squenixs IPs are synonymous with PS just like MGS / Silent Hill etc! If Sony are trying to acquire individual IPs or whole companies then Sony is serious in cementing these popular IPs as PS Branding ONLY! And its not the end of surprise acquisitions from either behemoths! How fast was sony in nabbing Jade from stadia suicide?!
Things will move fast once the Back compat SERVICE/FEATURE is announced! Is it a service or is it Sonys answer to GAMEPASS!? This is the reason why Sonys QUIET!! ALOT of moving DUCKS!
As for PS3 stores closing geeze! They are still online?! Wow I mean they can't stay online untill the end of time Right? Or is it possible? I dunno stuff that isn't a big deal not only cause I move on to the next consoles, so why would I care, but even if I still were gaming on PS3 I still expect them to go offline St some point eventually 2006-2021 wow that's a long time
But of if there were a way to keep it online forever and not lose any money than I would for those who still game on PS3 cause I sure gamers indeed are still gaming bon PS3 and I can't blame them. Still my favorite console of all time

I don't have any problems with what Sony is doing they do studies and the massively favor what they are doing. It's a waste of resources. I would almost say there may be a lot of Xbox fans just talking just to take sony down they are almost always the ones spreading negative reviews or articles .i mean can I not play par games or w games if I wanted on ps. I would buy another PS5 if it gets full backwards compatibility, why? Because I want to support that, Backwards Compatibility is by far my most requested feature.

Sony has a BC team, the same people who done an excellent job with PS5 BC so I’ve no doubt that Sony are working on Legacy Software either through PSNow,Emulation or maybe just maybe an update for PS5 to play legacy titles via disc.
Sony better do something so I can play older games on PS5. I care about older games i have a huge digital library, I do own alot of that digital library physically as well. That being said some of the games were only available digitally. I been a PS+ member since PS3 so that's alot of instant game collection games as sony used to call it. I don't like that I am only able to access some of these games by plugging my PS3 back in. I would love to heard some alternative solution.
My message to everyone:
Download all that you can in the next few months. There are so many titles on there that are digital only and WILL be lost media when Sony shuts it down.
Don't leave it to chance that Sony might bring over the older store's contents to PS4/5.
Games aren't just entertainment. They are also Art. It is beyond just playing. We lost a significant portion of early film. We should strive not to lose gaming history.
For example, every Ratchet and Clank from Tools of Destruction backwards is currently completely inaccessible on supported hardware. They aren't even on PS Now. And they are good games that still hold up well. Then you get to DLC. If it hasn't been repackaged in a physical form, it is lost completely without the stores.
We are at risk of losing not just something fun to play but works of art, engineering, and culture.
They dont have to necessarily do it through backwards compatibility either. They could open source older hardware and release ROMs for at least their first party for unsupported systems. They aren't making money on their first party titles on the PS1-3, PSP, and Vita without Storefronts.
