QUOTE FROM THE BLOG:
Hideaki Nishino
Senior Vice President, Platform Planning & Management:

More than four years ago, we launched PlayStation VR to offer a transformative new way to play games on PS4, providing a much stronger sense of presence and deeper immersion to players compared with traditional games. In that time, we’ve seen tremendous experiences that have propelled virtual reality gaming forward, including highly acclaimed titles like Astro Bot: Rescue Mission, Tetris Effect, Blood & Truth, Moss, Beat Saber, and Resident Evil 7 biohazard. We’ve also enhanced the experience for some PS VR titles when played on PS4 Pro and PlayStation 5.

Today I’m pleased to share that our next-generation VR system will be coming to PlayStation 5, enabling the ultimate entertainment experience with dramatic leaps in performance and interactivity. Players will feel an even greater sense of presence and become even more immersed in their game worlds once they put on the new headset.

We’re continuing to innovate with our new VR system so that our fans can continue to enjoy the unique experiences that are synonymous with PlayStation. We’re taking what we’ve learned since launching PS VR on PS4 to develop a next-gen VR system that enhances everything from resolution and field of view to tracking and input. It will connect to PS5 with a single cord to simplify setup and improve ease-of-use, while enabling a high-fidelity visual experience.

One of the innovations we’re excited about is our new VR controller, which will incorporate some of the key features found in the DualSense wireless controller, along with a focus on great ergonomics. That’s just one of the examples of future-proof technology we’re developing to match our vision for a whole new generation of VR games and experiences.

There’s still a lot of development underway for our new VR system, so it won’t be launching in 2021. But we wanted to provide this early update to our fans, as the development community has started to work on creating new worlds for you to explore in virtual reality.

We also want to thank all of our PS VR players for your continued support — with upcoming games like After The Fall, Sniper Elite VR, and Humanity, there’s much more to come for PS VR whether you’re playing on PS4 or PS5. With both PlayStation VR and the next-generation VR system we’re building, our commitment to virtual reality as a medium for games is stronger than ever. We look forward to sharing more details in the future!

  5. I’m expecting adaptive triggers on the new controllers and likely a next-gen inside-out tracking for the headset that will track the DualSense controllers, and maybe even finger tracking due to this. It would make sense to me since I was initially kind of surprised that the DualSense controllers didn’t have a way for a camera to track the light on it for backward-compatible VR games. It appears to me that they are leaving light tracking entirely behind for something revolutionary.

  6. I’d way rather have a wired headset that can play longer and more powerful games. After getting a quest 2 I realised I don’t really notice the wire in PSVR while playing

  7. To be honest I was really hoping they won't do this because I got my psvr headset for ps4 over a year ago and I got the ps4 camera to USB dongle for ps5 so my headset will work on ps5 so I hoped that play station will not do another vt headset only on ps5 and maybe compatible with ps6 in the future

  8. The PSVR2 will completely change people's mind on console VR gaming. I still remember going to Rec Centers and being told that I was stupid because I was on the PSVR, they said it wasn't actual VR. But boy oh boy, with the PSVR2 coming soon, I think it will send those idiots back crying

  9. I do hope there will be some level of downwards compatibility from PSVR2 to PSVR (especially content/games) on the PS5, otherwise there will be 2x systems:
PSVR for the old-gen PSVR games, with the current requirement to have the "old" PSVR system, old PS4 controllers, old camera etc.
Plus PSVR2 for the new content, controllers etc.
Otherwise as a PS5 owner you will have to own 2x systems (PSVR & PSVR2) or forget all the investments (games, hardware) you did in the past?
The one-cable solution would be welcome, provided it is using off-the-shelf/open standards and no funky connectors or something.
I'm sure PSVR2 (let's call it that until the formal new name is announced) will be a major improvement.
Fingers crossed (figuratively & literally) for the new controllers as the current Move Controllers were not really designed (that well) for PSVR.
Hopefully something wireless (near-field?) and no more tracking on basis of light/colours.
BTW, I do expect (read: hope) that for PSVR2 a new, different camera will be announced, as the current PS5 camera is in my perception a bit too limited (for PSVR2).
Unless PSVR2 will not use the PS5 camera at all for tracking, that is also a good possibility.
But I'm also expecting that the current noin-Sony VR solutions (Quest etc) still will be able to compete on various levels.
Although I do hope that Sony will make a significant impact with PSVR2, too bad that won't be this year.
The PS5 is a good step forward but that step could have been better, Sony did encompass some limitations with regards to performance (FPS) and thermals (heat, or rather: trying to avoid that)
By the time PSVR2 will be available I might consider the PS5 but for now, with the whole debacle of poor availability of the next-gen consoles, I will patiently wait.
A PS4 Pro with the PSVR is good enough for me.
Let's wait & see what more information will become available regarding to PSVR2.
I am a wee bit worried though that the current shortage of silicon may have an (negative) impact on the near-future design of PSVR2.
Where S0ny has to make crucial decisions this year for the designs & such.
The future looks bright, hopefully 4k resolution per eye! 🙂

  10. Wireless is something that is not going to work well delay-wise when the console has to provide the cpu calculations (you will get a lot of lag frustrations when communicating wireless and that is something you don't want on a 60 or 120FPS experience). The only thing you can hope for is that you have a single wire actually applying 1-wire communication to send positional data. But then again, you still need images send to your unit displays, so don't count on small wires, but for sure there is no wireless if the headset does not have the cpu and gpu components.
