i highly reccomend you guys go out on a raft or small boat and go along the coast of your island, this allows you to map out exactly how big it is and even lets you uncover where the biomes on it are, so you can see where black forests are etc, and it also means you know how much stuff you can do on the island before moving on to others for their resources

I mean if there's actually a big estimated time gap between making the charcoal kiln and smelter, you should have gone for the charcoal kiln first so that you can start amassing fuel for the smelter for when it becomes available.
