Resident Evil Village Review – Great at the start but inconsistent quality

I feel like I want to give #ResidentEvilVillage a running commentary of scores, such is the range and variety of its sections: 8, 9 (โ€ฆJesus, maybe a 10?), 8, 7, 6โ€ฆ Thereโ€™s so much going on but it chops and changes from beat to beat in such a way you can almost see the line between sections. Most noticeably it feels like thereโ€™s a real difference between the first and second half. The opening is strong, clever, and fun โ€“ full of atmosphere and intrigue as you explore (and features a part thatโ€™s probably one of the best stand-alone horror levels of the year). While the latter half veers into โ€˜okayโ€™ territory, with some combat slogs, a boss fight thatโ€™s a bit of a stretch even by Resident Evil standards and, while itโ€™s still fun, it lacks the same spark and craft as the beginning.

  1. I didnt feel the horror aspect at all in the demo the daughters are not in the least bit effective in scaring you that worried me from the jump but ultimately if its a good game with a welll made story that fits the resident evil universe i can forgive it for lacking horror

  2. I learned that the Japanese style of production really does what you describe as "having different teams make each story bit"

This is much more apparent in anime production where they allocate the animation budget towards the most important scenes/episodes rather than have a consistent quality all throughout like in western productions

Therefore I wouldn't be surprised that re8, a Japanese production does the same thing with each section

tl;dr the inconsistent level of quality is a Japanese thing

  3. Please tell me we don't get any quick time events in this! Or stupid dock/hoas (Chris Campaign) situations from Resident Evil 6 where you die because of terrible camera angles and controls, please tell me they aren't in resident evil village!

  4. Jesus Christ since the reveal trailer it was crystal clear this game is going to be action heavy… that being said it still didn't lose its horror elements and the atmosphere…+ it has so much exploration elements now and weapon upgrades, treasures…do you miss RE7's "one type clay enemy"that much? fine go and play RE7 then… just because Capcom is doing something different here that doesn't mean it is worse… Wacky? stupid? excuse me? didn't Ethan lose his leg and then put it back in the RE7? sigh

  5. Everytime anyone says 7 to 15 hours I check my steam play hours and 40 hours have gone by and I'm still exploring and getting side missions so if it's similar to re 7 I'm looking at 30 hours

  6. Agree with Reviewer. Just finished the Demo and the game feels good, but not as memorable as RE 7 whatsover. My big gripe is that this is supposed to be Europe, but everyone sounds like they got a gig after their tour with an Off Broadway production of a some modern American period piece wrapped up. Why does Eastern Europe sound like downtown Seattle?

This definitely looks like a Revelation game that was spruced up for prime time and doesn't quite hit the mark.

It's ok. I'll take it for what it is.
Making lightning strike twice is a tall order for any creative endeavor.

Looking forward to an entertaining, though not overly impressive campaign.

  7. So I watched this and I still don't understand what the rest of the whopping 90% of the game consists of, given you emptied it on collectibles and beat the main story in 13 hours. Elaborate? I don't count replaying on another difficulty as another 10% unveiled. I mean like in pure content, where's the rest of the (almost entire( game?

  8. I feel like every resident evil is action packed. And they all get easier and less scary as you go on because you keep getting more weapons and a better understanding of the enemies.

  9. The game looks top action heavy for a resident evil game for me. I heard all the sisters are basically the same challenge type 3 times over. That sounds a bit boring to me. It also doesn't look scary. It is more pantomime horror by the looks of the characters

5 is great and 6 is good in it's own right even though I'm not the biggest fan of 6
