Retcon Retrospective – Ep. 44: Q1 '21 (more or less)

Hey, Retcon Raider here!

Just wrapped up Solasta, so this seemed like a good time to sneak in one of my increasingly infrequent Retrospectives! Also, it’s a new year and it’s been 3 months since the last one and we just hit a little over 100 years worth of accrued Watch Time and we’re about to hit 20k Subscribers.

Not that I really ended up talking about any of that stuff. I mostly just ramble about video games and show off pictures of my cats. So if that’s what you’re looking for, then you’ve come to the right place!

00:00 Intro & Analytics.
04:14 Chattering about Wrath of the Righteous.
10:56 Chattering about Solasta.
12:40 Chattering about the Darkest of Dungeons.
15:42 Chattering about Pathfinder: Kingmaker.
17:30 Namedropping some other CRPGs.
17:55 Chattering about Fallout: Van Buren.
20:18 Chattering about turn-based tactical games.
22:05 Chattering about Baldur’s Gate 3.
23:15 Special thanks, plus a cat pic or two.

  1. BG3 implemented the druids, I would prefer more history, but with the high quality, no fan for the plot (narrative sucks), will not be finished until 2023.

Pathfinder wrath, it's fine even though I would like it to implement the climbing, jumping & tumbling, but the narrative makes up for it.

Solasta is unbelieved, on more than one occasion that i'm think they were players with you DM's. The imersion is most realistic (even "Critical Roll"), well implemented, but like pathfinder you cannot jump at please. The same thing happens with diablo 4, 20 years ago the jump was implemented in the diablo clones such as dark alliance & norrath champions and more recent games have it.

All is just my opinions many will love them but only solasta win for my.

  2. Hey Retcon, one of the reasons that I subscribed to you was your voice and your "slow" pace. I enjoy it vastly more then just rushing a game like Kingmaker with such a lush story, Keep up the good work man.
    Also, beautiful cats you have

  3. About Wrath, – I must say there are good start, balanced storytelling with some action, then after first sequence of events pacing just stops at tons of exposition, text eclipse any gameplay, and not because of you, I think there some redacture failure. Script is just graphomaniac. Considering they translated this text from russian. In Kingmaker there was Chris Avellone, who redacted script, here in Wrath we can see this writing impulse unchecked.)

  4. I enjoy the story along with the gameplay during these types of games. Do not change Raider……It is great. There are a lot of channels out there that speed run through things, I like your casual emersion in a game. Thanks for all that you do.

  5. I know it's a little outside what you normally do, but Disgaea 6 drops, It'd be interesting to see you check it out 😀 it's a TRPG just with a very anime aesthetic/storyline 😀 That being said, I don't think it's got a PC release?

  6. I'd like to see the data (well, not really, my days as a data-wrangler for hire are thankfully behind me) on the negative comments re pacing compared to subscribers and regular viewers…I suspect those of us who watch most of your output watch BECAUSE of the slower paced, thoughtful and lore-heavy coverage not in spite of it. (Oh come on, you got me to watch shooty-bang-bang series recently – X-COM, Gears Tactics and Phoenix Point are not my thing – Phoenix Point was a very pleasant surprise so thanks for that particularly.) And the cat pictures of course 🙂

Re WotR specifically, although I'm not a Pathfinder player either tabletop or CRPG, I do enjoy the system's lore (I wander off to look up certain things later) because I like the stories. After the last WotR video I was wondering about the possibilities of setting Ember and The Storyteller in conversation and then just seeing where they went. (I love Ember's potential – she seems to be styled as the archetype of the 'Holy Fool' writ large – an archetype I am fond of.)

Ha – waving my usual flag for Stygian 🙂 And Fallout:VB – found the lore videos and binged them.

Solasta has been another pleasant surprise, but I share your hesitancy re BG3. I did not like the previous Larian Games output, and so I was not as thrilled as lots of other folks when they were announced as the developers for BG3. My reservations have been vindicated so far; I don't hate it, but I'm very very unlikely to ever play it myself.

Algorithm, yadda yadda yadda 🙂 And I'm done.

  7. Yes officially you should be able to get to the end of Chapter 3 for Wrath of the Righteous, but in the current beta at least for me that is impossible as the game becomes hard to impossible to play, especially when it comes to the games version of Kingdom Management … if you ignore it I can gat to about I would say half of the chapter before it just becomes not playable for me ….
So Chapter II End is right now the best place to stop for your series, maybe a bit of the beginnings of chapter 3 just a quick look around at what you are offered there, maybe a battle or 2 .. but after that … it makes you really feel more like a tester then a player …

  8. I, and I think many others, appreciate the effort put into each video. No offense to the people complaining about the pace, but I feel there are more than enough channels on Youtube with clickbait titles and daily low effort reaction videos that can satiate their need for instant gratification.
Plus, any video not containing the phrase "Smash that subscribe button and hit the notification bell." gets bonus points from me.

  9. As far as I understand it, people seek entertainment the most when they need to relax, i.e. in everyday working days, so it's indeed no wonder why December and January are that bad for youtubers, Although, your voice is indeed enhancing Wraiths of the Righteous experience we receive. Darkest Dungeon is meh. Kingmaker is quite good, but it would be a waste to do both of the pathfinder games at the same time, imho. Regarding possible new series I suggest you try out Valkirya Chronicles – it's quite good tactic game with quite a story, it may be to your liking. BG3 is seem disgusting to many hardcore baldur's gate lovers such as I am – it's essentially Divinity Original Sin 3, not a Baldur's gate tittle. Cats are always welcome.

  11. We love you just as you are buddy. I personally love your pacing and hate when other youtubers skip over so much stuff just to finish the game fast to retain as many views as possible, I do understand it, it's their livelihood but I think they just get used to it after playing like that for a few years and never stop.
I wish I could help your channel to grow faster, I do drop your name when recommending gaming channels but I don't feel it's enough.

  12. I followed because I really liked the Van Buren videos, and now I'm slowly making my way through some playthroughs. This is probably one of my favourite gaming channels.

  13. Wrath isn't wholly terrible, but the pacing isn't great. Solasta has better pacing. Really, it does. I say this as a person who pays his bills by writing. Wrath's narrative is bogged down and just plain sloppy in places. Solasta is much, much better at rationing out the narrative and exposition in manageable chunks.

I am personally disappointed by the first Pathfinder game. Never got a chance to finish it. Got deep into the game, and every single time I ran into game breaking bugs or kingdom issues. So I might have become a bit biased by dislike.

  14. Tried other content creators with the same content but still end up going back to your channel. I prefer your layback and calculated approach to any series, or those tiny tidbits of text with amusing or informative excerpts, not to mention, that voice really immerses oneself deep into the lore. Thank you man, you made pandemic alot more bearable. Cheers from the Philippines!
