Review – The Elder Scrolls: Blades [Requests Month 2021 Review #4]

In this review, I take a look at the game Todd Howard described as β€œat its heart, a pure Elder Scrolls game” that was designed for mobile devices and ported to Nintendo Switch.

ESRB Rating: Teen (13+) – Blood, Violence

  1. You have far more patience than I. The very idea of playing through this entire game is almost enough to give me a headache. Thank you for making this video all the same. It is impressively thorough.

  2. I have played all the single player Elder Scrolls games since Daggerfall, save this one, and I put quite a bit of time into each and you know what? They all suck. The story and quests are boring and the character profession system along with the weapons, armor, items and magic are terrible as well. I really like RPGS and have been playing them since Dragon Warrior on the NES and the Gold Box games when I was a kid, but Bethesda just can't make a good RPG, and they utterly ruined what was a great start to a non-medeival based RPG seroes- Fallout. New Vegas is great, but that's likely because they didn't make it. I think they rival EA for shittyness.

  3. I'm surprised I could sit through this entire thing, but I did. I have to say this gave me an unintentional laugh once, but dear God, it seems this is basically on the level of Tiberium Twilight minus the always online DRM, but that's probably b/c it was made as a mobile game first.

  4. Don't spend money on that trash. Just download Raid Shadow Legends and enjoy a AAA grade game, with PC grade graphics and revolutionary gameplay. More than 400 unique champions, best game ever.

  6. Timers, a gameplay idea that really got downhill quickly. Makes sense in a realtime strategy game but outside that is both hideous and exploitative if paired with monetization. While i can skip the second case by not playing those games i fear for that "feature" getting insdie more and more other titles. For example in DA: Inquisition it just wastes the player's time, if i want to explore the "openworld" i do it when i want not because i need to wait for something to unlock, if i continue with the main quest i don't want to wait for a timer to unlock the next step, i've already completed doing missions or gathering resources so let's move on, right? "No, please wait few hours of RL". Not surprised seeing there are mods that remove that element on PC but with a server controlled game it's unlikely you can do that.
In a way i started to respect more what they achieved with games on the PSP with mobile in mind: while splitting gameplay in short missions and various repetitive tasks resulted in being "dry" compared to games in other systems, it was made to respect the player playing on the move within a few minutes, choosing what to do and not instead of "engaging" him with tasks with little meaning. Sure, in various cases you had to repeat the same mission many times to collect stuff (ex. to create new gear in Monster Hunter) but it was still a better loop compared to boring you to pay to skip tasks with loot that isn't even interesting.

  7. I'm only 20 minutes in… I KNOW I hate this game… it literally strips away every aspect of elder scrolls I like… no open world exploration? you are essentially forced to play warrior?! the most noob of class. the gameplay actually looks hideous… I admit ugly games can have charm… ie Minecraft… a games visual style can also grow on you… ie DayZ …
it looks like the majority of gameplay is left right "combo" weapon hit ew I have always tried to play a pure mage… so these game mechanics under the elder scrolls banner SCARES me for Bethesda for the FIRST legit time… I always assumed Elder Scrolls 6 was gonna be good… until today.

  8. I'm sorry DWT, but 2 minutes into the review and I'm already sick of it. This "game" looks fucking awful in every way imaginable. I have no idea how you played hours of it. I can't watch this.

  10. It says alot when Gameloft's switch ports seem to be of higher quality, I've only played Modern Combat 5, but while it was paid instead of free, it actually removes all the freemium elements. (and even the stuff kept in, were made unlockable by a cod-style progression system except you get EXP via playing the campaign instead of lootboxes and the armor sets were made cosmetic.) and while I've only played a few hours worth, it doesn't lag notably or anything else.

it's actually kinda funny since the PC port of Modern Combat 5 is free to play with all the micotransaction nonsenese, a hud that's mostly unchanged from the mobile version (While the Switch Port had an overhauled HUD.) and crashes.

So Gameloft actually made a better Switch Port and Gameloft are incredibly scummy nowadays, Bethesda got beaten out in switch ports by a greedy mobile developer that make Grenades Consumables in their shooters. (I wish I was kidding.)
