We have some rations, but they are disappearing fast. Everything needs to be done at once, but the priority is shelter, food, and security. Thank goodness we landed in the Spring.

Our Review:

Rimworld is an intricately detailed and compelling Science Fiction colony simulation that is driven by an intelligent AI storyteller. Originally called Eclipse Colony, Rimworld is an indie top-down management and construction simulation game that was initially released in 2013, and officially released in 2018 by Montreal-based developer Ludeon Studios (founded by Tynan Sylvester).

Rimworld is a deep simulation in the tradition of Dwarf Fortress, but in space on the surface of a frontier world. Despite it’s simple top-down graphics, it achieves a level of detail and realism that makes it one of the best games made in recent times.

The background universe is immense with a star spanning civilization that is reflected in the background stories of the starliner survivors. The Rimworld itself is a huge open world where you can do anything, constrained only by the hostile planet, and by the limits of your imagination. Surviving the Rimworld is very challenging, even on moderate setting. You must anticipate the growing needs of your colonists and an ever changing environment; and craft or trade for every item required to survive. A pause button is always available, so careful planning is crucial to survival.

Every world is procedurally generated, and with a different cast everytime, it is always a new game. The difficulty ramps up quickly, and it is a constant scramble to do everything to prepare. At higher difficulty levels, it doesnt take much to end up with a dead colony. The game is a constant balancing act, and you have absolute freedom to screw things up as there is no cheating and no hand holding. The learning curve to survive is steep but hugely satisfying.

It is a wonderful game for the entire family to learn and enjoy together. The gameplay is never repetitive. It is a difficult, intricate, detailed, and wonderful game that rewards those with the patience to learn, persevere, and survive. Survival wasn’t meant to be easy!
