Shadow of the Tomb Raider is the third installment in the new generation of Tomb Raider games (Tomb Raider and Rise of the Tomb Raider). According to the developers, the game will be the defining moment of the trilogy. Nothing can be seen of the innocent, somewhat frightened girl from the original. Instead, we get a confident and strong woman, ready for whatever comes her way. Besides Lara, old acquaintance Jonah Maiava also makes his return in this part and once again you have to take on the evil “Trinity” organization, the group of antagonists from Rise of the Tomb Raider.

Rumble in the Jungle
In Shadow of the Tomb Raider, we exchange the dark island of Yamatai and the chilly Himalayas of the previous parts for colorful Mexico. You were instructed to keep an eye on a core figure from the Trinity organization somewhere in a village in Mexico. Through overheard conversations you learn that Trinity is looking for a few mysterious relics with which they say they can reshape the world. If we keep an eye on the bad guys and follow for a while, we soon find ourselves in front of a temple in which the mentioned relics are hidden. It’s clearly time for some Tomb Raiding!

As usual, during the adventure, Lara uses a number of tools to overcome the obstacles in the temples and the Mexican jungle. Returning are the now iconic pickaxe and bow and arrow with which she can create improvised rope bridges to cover long distances. If you’ve played the previous games, the way you control Lara will feel familiar too; you have a button to make Lara jump, a button to interact with the environment and a button to use your pickaxe. The ‘Survival Instinct’ feature (Lara’s own spider sense) also returns to help you navigate; at the touch of a button, your destination immediately lights up and you see which objects in the vicinity are important.

Lara Klauter
As in the previous parts, climbing walls and cliffs again plays a big role in the gameplay. A new element in this part is that Lara can now descend directly from rock walls with a rope, adding an extra layer to how Lara moves through the world of Shadow of the Tomb Raider. The puzzle element also shows itself while playing. By sliding and moving a number of objects you create new paths to get your hands on the coveted relics.
