Should you main a Vengeance Demon Hunter in Shadowlands?

Vengeance DH has a toolkit designed for mythic+ dungeons. There’s DPS, self-sustain through healing, and unique utilities and mobility that creates an excellent tank. To pair with that, Vengeance Demon Hunters have the largest gaps in their active mitigation of any tank and can be knocked over when they don’t have any survivability cooldowns up.

As it stands right now VDH as a spec absolutely pumps out DPS because there’s significant synergy between the Kyrian covenant ability, Elysian Decree, and the legendary power, Razelikh’s Defilement. As of 11/9 Blizzard has significantly nerfed the cooldown reduction of ED with the legendary power. As it stands, it’s still the combo to take for mythic+ content, but the covenant and legendary choices are now much more wide open. Fiery Soul is still the go-to for raiding.

Overall, I think Vengeance Demon Hunters are in a great place. They are strong enough to merit inclusion even in high-end mythic raiding and are definitely one of if not the strongest mythic plus tanks. Even with possible nerfs incoming — they are going to be a strong option in Shadowlands.

  1. Blizzard has nerfed the cooldown reduction of Elysian Decree with Razelikh's Defilement from 8sec to 2sec (https://shadowlands.wowhead.com/news=319017/shadowlands-beta-class-and-spell-hotfixes-11-9-blood-dk-death-strike-buffed-veng). This brings the following changes:

Razelikh's Defilement and Elysian Decree are still the strongest m+ combo — but not by much. Fiery Soul is now the best raiding legendary. The covenant choices are much more wide open, with Venthyr, Night Fae, and Kyrian all being strong competitors.

  2. Thx a lot you added the icons for the items, talents and so on. Learning and enjoying a lot from this channel! 🙂
Ahh and I edited to add an answer to your question. I'm really doubting… Dh, Pally or Druid, can't really decide… But Dh it's a very nice option!

  3. The venthyr covenant option is just badly designed, it deals the same amount of damage as elysian decree, but venthyr req meta to spead, elysian does not, same cd on both.
If you decide to spread the venthyr abillity with meta, you got a 8 sec window to make that decision and if you do, it's dealing about the same damage as if you would have popped one elysian decree. Also in order to spread the venthyr one, you need to burn off your main def cd and when meta is active, you wont draw that much benifit from the def portion of venthyr, since you're more or less already unkillable in meta… It's really counter-intuitive, badly designed.

  4. I also avoided Demon Hunter for years because I do not like how the elves look, with proportions almost as bad as He-Man action figures, and women without hips. But I became strangely fond of the "stoner dressed in pajamas" look. Now he just needs an open front bathrobe or cardigan to get the Lebowski vibe even stronger. http://davidvs.net/hobbies/art/weedie1.png is my current shirtless look, http://davidvs.net/hobbies/art/weedie2.png is the most Hippie version
