The game is full of content that can let you play it like a normal game for almost a month without touching any of the premium currencies but once your story content is over (About AR36 now) and you've done all the small side things, its like being hitting the ground after falling top speed off a cliff in pacing and progression which is really hard to get adjusted to.
You can progress a single character up about 1/4 a tier in strength each day which gives you only about 20 minutes of gameplay. The end game dungeon, Spiral Abyss, holds the most free primogems in the game (600 every two weeks/4 gacha pulls) but to be able to fully clear abyss takes an extremely long time. That huge reward of primogem income is a huge bait for many people to incentivize paying $15 a month on the monthly pass for triple the resources you can get farming the entire map a day for 4 hours. You can buy resin refills to make your progression pace feel smoother with a cap of 6 resin refills which costs 800 primogems which you can buy for $15 also. So $15 a day and $15 a month for fully unlocked progression. Some people are F2P, Monthly Passes only, Monthly Pass + sacrifice some free daily primo for resin, pay some $$ for a little resin, etc etc…
However, totally F2P people are full clearing abyss with the little resources the game gives just by logging in daily. Most people don't farm or grind — it really only gives you 20 min a day and then you can farm smaller stuff if you feel like it. After beating Abyss, for some reason there is no more difficult challenges at all which I hope is changed soon. At least Its very nice that the game is not pay2win but that might be a next-level psychological tactic LOL
You can easily slot this game into your schedule and do all the important resin grinding stuff on a lunch break or to cool off after work and put it away for the rest of the day. Absolutely don't get invested into Genshin as your main game unless money is no issue.
Basic math: "Brain dead"
Memorizing everything you need to upgrade all your characters: "Galaxy moment"
Try finish the game hahahha
Who the fuck is this guy lmao??
There is a few things i disagree on.
Dont play this game like a full time job, just dont. Play the game like a mobile game. Log in, do commisions, spend your resin and do some explorasion or quests.
Dont rush for a 5 star, The pity gona kick in eventuly, take your time.
Dont roll on permanent banner, use the pity, only roll on limited-time banners. If F2P aim for 4 stars.
Genshin is heavily monetized, but once you reach endgame and you have decent artifacts on your main team, most of the monetization dosent matter much. If you can ignore the new playable characters.
Impressed by the many stuff you got wrong despite all this time on the game. For anyone looking to play GI, it's not just gacha mechanics: gacha IS the core of the game, rpg is only packaging. If gacha isn't your thing, please don't bother. For those still interested: every character have excellent potential, the main point is to have a balanced team so long as they're built properly – just like in any game. As for the "stronger/best" characters: some of the most sought after are freaking 4 stars units. Literally all the content can be cleared with the starter characters, wishing is optional and priMos (not prios) are farmable through quests, chests and events. Also, you can get single wishes, omitting this fact is such blatant nonsense. Oh and 4 stars are guaranteed every 10 wishes whether you use 10s or singles. Using primos to refill resin isn't mandatory, just like anything in this game. Also saying that mora (aka gold) is akin to premium currency is a lie. You get mora through quests, fighting monsters, chests and events and it's used to buy stuff from npcs, like any normal game, as well as to upgrade weapons/artifacts like you do in other games. So so many things wrong with this review it's almost hilarious. Oh and last thing: for the love of god, stop comparing it to botw… They play in different courts. Both game are cool, they don't need the dumb comparison.
I didn't understand a word when you started with the monetization systems. Think I rather stay away from this one.
10:58 star signs/ constellations are only through wishing. I know you meant character talents, but it is good to clarify for new players so they don't get confused.
So it's like, excellent game, absolutely horrific monetization (which is pretty much what I though but I didn't know the base game was actually this good, I may get it as a good side game)
It does not matter in what year you ask this question. My answer will never change -> NO.
I played it on release and had my fair share of fun untill I bumped into the insane grindwall. The lack of earning primogems and the ultra high FOMO with all the special characters during events pushes you to hard towards your wallet. Genshin Impact was my first and last gacha game ever.
So many easy mistakes. That's why you should ask some real end-game player first before you publish your review.
Lazy youtuber don't do enough homework.
I was f2p till i decided to buy the 5 dollar pass for 30 days and the Gnostic pass which is 20 dollars for every 45 to 50 days or so. I mostly use 4 star characters because in this game with enough investment any character can be good. That being said you do need a lot of carp to improve multiple characters
Alright, this is clearly a review made by a newbie for newbies, its very misleading about people spending money to upgrade characters, don't get me wrong, the monetization of this game is total shit because the gacha rate is abysmal, but nobody actually spends money on upgrade materials! My advise for new players: Either don't spend a penny or only spend $5 a month on the Pass, you will be fine, anything else is a total unnecessary.
I mean anyone who played genshin impact more then 1 month should see all the errors in the video
well id say you should give it a try its free after all and youll get enjoyment from the game until you reach ar45 at that point it becomes very stale since at the moment thare isnt enough content to keep you playing (will get better by time) but getting to ar (adventure rank) will take you around 2-3 months (if you dont bee line the game and take your time) and the monetization isnt really noticible until you reach ar 45 as most of the best units in the game are 4* (purple) so getting them will be very easy so its not like you HAVE to spend money it will get you ahead but if you have patience then its unnecessary
I think you made monetization more confusing then it actually is. Yes, it's a Gatcha game, and if you have a problem with gambling, you shouldn't play this game. To play game like this, you should expect that you wont have everything. instead, focus for what you really want. I did play it from start, while buying Battle – Pass. I have 25 characters right now, 15 of them are geared and high lvl, others are just there as i don't use them. It's not as confusing as you made it up to be.
Monetization isn't any worse then most AAA games with loot boxes.
You don't get spams to go op up or go to "Wish"
You get guaranteed 4 star character every 10 pulls, or 5 star every 90 pulls
It might look that you need lot's of Stamina to farm stuff for your characters, but in reality (unless you pull for every character,) later on, you have enough time and resources for your characters. It might look that you need to rush lvl them up, but you actually don't
My advice, try it, play with what you got, use gems you get in game, finish exploring and quest, and turn it off. There is literally nothing at end game. Just endless grind.
Go in, knowing that this is Gatcha game.
So, to put numbers to his words: One "Pull" which is what gacha communities refer to the act of spending money on the gambling system or "Gacha mechanics" in order to get a character, weapon, or other item, costs 160 Primogems. That's roughly equivalent to a dollar. Daily quests offer 60 primogems for completing four quests and then turning them in. Then there's an end-game area called "The spiral abyss" which offers 300 primogems every two weeks, but most players will not be able to complete it without either spending a lot (a few hundred dollars a week) of money or a few months of grinding.
This means, that for most players, you will only get the 60 primos, plus any kind of event primos, plus whatever you can find rattling around in the landscape. Which means you'll earn one pull roughly every three days, and two pulls every five. In order to guarantee yourself anything good, you have to spend at least ten pulls. Meaning roughly twenty five days will go by before you even have the chance at earning anything worthwhile. The alternative is, of course, to spend ten-ninety dollars trying to get whatever it is you want every week or so. Because there is a system called "banners" in this game. Which means the super high-rank characters that are super rare cycle out every two weeks. You have to get 180 pulls in order to guarantee yourself those characters. That's either spending $180 for one copy of that characters, which you need up to seven copies to max them out, or roughly a year and four months to guarantee yourself a single copy of that high-ranking character. During which time you cannot be tempted by any other character coming out, else you will cost yourself time.
To illustrate this point. Most content creators for this game, whos' job it is to literally make as much content as is possible on this game with, hopefully, every character that comes out, often spend a minimum of 3k on this game every two weeks. So again, if you play this game, enjoy it. Do not get super hung up on having to have every character. Focus on the ones you want, and remember to check your spending. If you have a gambeling problem I cannot reccomend this game for the sake of your sanity and well being.
Imagine thinking Lisa is useless
Good video, but there are a couple things you missed:
1. Anemo sigils drop from chests primarily, you only get a few from upgrading statues. There is no mechanic in the game that lets you spend money to get anemo sigils or anemoculus faster.
2. Constellations (aside from the main characterās) can only be unlocked by getting a duplicate if that character while wishing.
The game is also on PS4 btw ^^
this game could have given more, but unfortunately it stopped on gatcha games, because the end-game is based only on finding characters and daily things.
if u want a game to play while shiting 20 min a day yes, if u want a game with content, deep, and good progression system dont bother.
Criticize the game has limited energy system but then said have to play the game as a job to progress :))
Try to pick one narrative next time.
Not really the only currency that really is a thing is genesis crystals which you can easily keep a track on, and the other currency is primos
When I was still young – and by young I mean VERY YOUNG – a nice and simple "MMO" caught my eye and left a very deep lasting impression. It was "Free Realms", now, unfortunately, closed. It was a colorful adventure MMO for Kids. What made it special was, that crafts like ore mining, cooking etc. were actually little fun mini games. I loved it and I loved the colorful world and atmosphere. Ever since I was looking for a game that could recreate this feeling of peace and tranquility that Free Realm gave me back then.
And thanks to you, Josh Strife Hayes, I seem to have found it in Genshin Impact! Thank you for this!
I actually don't mind the microtransactions. Free Realms used to have a free mode and a subscription model, which allowed you to play more classes etc. Growing up with no pocket money what so ever I learned to relish even highly monetized games. š
Enjoying Genshin Impact right now!
im just hear to see you butcher the Chinese names
As a AR55 Waifu collector I must say that Genshin is indeed worth your time just don't rush it, play it as a secondary game if you must.
– Every now and then Mihoyo will seduce you with new characters, Waifus and Husbandos that will cause your nether regions to flow like a river but I advice you to resist the temptation, hold on to your Primogems until you can buy 90 wishes and when that's settled, simply wait for a character that you want to drop on the event banner.
– If you are a Low spender BattlePass and the Welking moon are worth the value but Primogems aren't, you do not get enough wishes for the price.
– Join a Discord server or follow a Instagram page for instructions and guides!! I must warn you that Genshin community are cringe at times to say the least.

I would say no, the gacha system is super greedy with low rates. Go F2P untill you complete the story tthen stop.
It very true that the game is designed to 'force' you to spend money. Nevertheless, I don't see any problem with that.. For a game of this quality and constant updating, I would like to spend something like 100 euro for it.. And this game is rather friendly to someone like me who only buys monthly card and monthly battle pass, which are 12euro/month combined.
As good as the game sounds, I feel like I need a pHD to understand the monetization systems.
I'm adventure rank 55 (very late endgame) and have been playing right since launch, and all I have to say is that this game is absolutely fantastic, except for one major downfall, which is super late endgame missing new and refreshing content. Endgame is just waiting for the next update.
Really, the weirdest thing is that the content isn't only the same thing each day, the game has mechanics to prevent you from grinding TOO MUCH at one time. The grind in genshin is more like over weeks, but only like an hour max per day.
The game didn't have enough content for endgame when it launched, so basically the updates are slowly but surely getting the game to a better spot.
I still play it though lol, because it still is fun and a casual game. I'm really excited for the upcoming updates.
another thing is that if you are really bad with your money (can't resist gambling and make poor decisions) dont play this game. Just like every other gacha it's kind of predatory to those kinds of spenders. Though if you can be smart with your money, its not a problem
I think this game looks absolutely fantastic and I am almost certain I would love it, but I am not even going to start playing it knowing that I will face the monetisation wall. It makes it impossible for me to even gather the motivation to download it. I wish games like this would have options where you can either get it free and grind / buy mtx, or pay a one off price to purge the game of that bullshit by replacing the mtx with fair ingame systems.
Kek idk why people just say gacha while me full f2p with 9 five star characters only welkin card battle pass š¤£
yes its a good game already have 500hours and spend a little bit of money^^
ps: game is out for ps4 too and ps5 soon too with the next update
I have a problem with this review. On one had, you clearly paid attention and made a lot of correct observations, but on the other your final verdict is completely wrong. This game is not pay-to-win. Many people treated it as such and paid with frustration for not getting anything worthwhile for their money. This game does not expect you to treat it as a second job. It downright stops you from playing for too long with limited monster spawns and resin. Genshin Impact is play-consistently-to-win. The optimal way to play is to explore all content you can and afterwards, jump in for maybe half an hour a day to do your daily commissions and spend resin. You can say its target audience are people playing on their tablets on their way to work. Every once in a while is an event that gives you more content to go through and a lot of rewards just for playing.
My advice is don't pay for anything except maybe Blessing of the Welkin Moon ($5) or Gnostic Hymn ($10). Spend all Acquaint Fates that you get for free, but keep the Intertwined Fates until there's a banner with your waifu in it. When that happens, spend all your primogems on Intertwined Fates and wish them all away until you get her.
That monetization system is disgusting.
A gave you šjust for cataloging all the currency. Man, labrynthine doesn't begin to describe it. Personally, I see no point in starting an ultimately futile endeavor. There's just too many other games out there.
It's PRIMO dude, not PRIOGEMS. Tell this to the Chinese players, because they don't even care. š
Let me put simple example here:
"Oh a new FIFA, Call of Duty and other AAA title for 60 euro, let me just pre-order both and in deluxe versions for 100 euro each year and buy ton of things for real money because """reasons"""… "
on the other hand:
"Oh no, f2p game contains paid content like they cannot maintain and expand their game for free, it is like 5 euro per month would kill my savings for next FIFA"
And now let look at this game monetization system a bit seriously. Gesnhin is 100% playable game without investing your own money or even spending primos you get in the game. Take Lisa for example. If you are causal player and play just for the story and enjoyment of the game you can max her out as she deals highest % damage in the game rn with her E. If you want more characters, then wait some time, learn what guarantee roll in gacha means and spend everything on these wishes and save your primos again. There is no need to cry about op characters because there is not even competetive scene in this game xD in my opinion people should just enjoy the game, play it for some time and when they think there is not enough content for them, uninstall the game and come back after few months. (if you feel like my english is creature from hell, feel free to correct me)
Its on ps4 also i played for about 20 mins and couldn't get into it. I might give it another shot sometime
I think you messed up the understanding of the currencies. There's only 1 premium currencies. Everything else you earn ingame. Even all the primogems you will be doing wishes with. Alot of the stuff you really make it sound more complicated than it really is. Artifacts and materials you only get from playing. Constellations you only get for rolling a character you already have ( except you'd main character that just gets theirs through quests).
And the currency you get from doing the wishes themselves is basically pity dust. So if you roll a bunch of stuff you don't want, you could use it to potentially straight up buy something you do need or want.
The monetization isn't bad, but people really do need to know what they are getting into to make accurate spending choices. Spending you still have to rely on rng, there is no direct spend to power ratio here. You can spend alot and still not get want you want.
Bruh, constellations (or star signs, as you call them) are gotten by getting duplicates of characters, not by high-level dungeons. "Accessories" (artifacts) are in high-level dungeons, and are much more important than having high constellations or 5* weapons. 4* and 5* weapons and characters are very well balanced, inasmuch as 4* duplicates are much easier to come across, this powering up 4* weapons and characters to the range of a zero-duplicate 5*. Some characters even have a best-in-slot 3* weapon, like Albedo – a 5* geo support. This game is way deeper (for better and worse) than what you summarized. MiHoYo is also generous with event rewards, after the first event was greedy as hell and players called them out on it.
Would I recommend playing it, even into the "endgame"? Absolutely. Would I recommend 100% free to play? Absolutely. Personally, I spend $5 a month for the Welkin Moon monthly card, which gives you 90 free primogems a day at your first login.
I'd love to see a video about a more gray area of MMOs…the RMT aspect. Not sure if you have any personal insight, but I would love to hear your opinions either way. It's always fascinated me for some reason.
