Sony PS5 DualSense controller review – It's so noisy! Have haptics / force feedback come at a cost?

Sony’s PS5 launched to much fanfare – and very limited availability in late 2020, but something that has been glossed over is how loud the new DualSense controller is. The haptic feedback might be great, as is the force feedback on the triggers, but if you are going to upset everyone around you, is this going to cause issues for your gaming?

In this video I include some sound recordings from the controller and talk about some of the great and not so great things when it comes to the Sony Playstation 5’s DualSense controller.

That’s not to say it’s bad, but playing silently is certainly a challenge without changing the settings.

  1. Hmm the joysticks sound the same to me, as do the typical buttons, but the triggers sound awful. I never considered fatigue being a downside to the haptic feedback but definitely agree that would take away from the experience after playing for a while.

  2. I don't mean to be negative so please forgive me if what i say makes me look like a smartass, if i'm not mistaken Sony calls the R2 and L2 buttons as "Adaptive Triggers" and "Haptic Feedback" for the vibrating motor.

For the the Haptic Feedback instead using the conventional rotary vibrating motor like the one on PS4 Controller they use Voice Coil Actuator on PS5 Controller and the combinations of motor, thread and gears for the Adaptive Triggers to provide resistance when you pull the R2 and L2.

And also most of the noise you hear usually comes from the built in speakers on the controller, the vibration intensity (Haptic Feedback) and the amount of resistance on Adaptive Triggers can be adjusted by the game developers but i'm sure only first party developers will bother to fine tune it.

  3. I have a 2 year old son and I have to turn off haptic feedback and the triggers, otherwise the noise will wake him. I def think the controller is too loud, hell my controller is louder than the console itself.
