Sylas Is Right (Part1) | Minute-Long Hot Take (League of Legends) #shorts

Sylas is right and I’m not sure the writers are aware of this. Currently this story doesn’t do enough to highlight the conditions that led to Sylas becoming the character we know him as today and that can be dangerous. Let’s talk about it.

Minute-Long Hot Takes is a series where I’ll try to give my usual analysis on certain topics involving pop culture media, but in under a minute 😀 Join the discussion in the comments section!

  1. This minute long hot take was already pretty dense, but there’s more that I couldn’t fit in the video lol. Even though I am criticizing the presentation of Sylas’s rebellion and the people oppressed by Demacia, that does not mean I think Sylas as a character should be changed. Sylas is clearly a sadistic character and I think it is understandable for him to be that way. What I’m arguing for is more effort in highlighting the literal generations of trauma that lead to such a violent and bloodthirsty rebellion within Demacia. Without doing so you end up depicting these victims of genocide as simply bloodthirsty anarchists and I cannot agree with that.

  2. I personally disagree. I the opression of mages in demacian culture is havily highlighted. In fact almost every 3rd story taking place in demacia has the suffering and marjinalization of mages highlighted at least by mentioning it.

Also i would argue that presenting every revolutionary who wants to topple institution as right would arguably be just as dangerous as glorifying all institution. Just because you want to end the current astablishment doesn’t make you a good person. Also someone might be justified and even right in wanting to topple authority but being right in you’re ends diesn’t mean you can’t be evil in the means you use.

Just as an example not many people could succesfully argue that Maximilien de Robespierre was a good person.

  3. the problem with the character of Sylas is, in my opinion based of his short story of his jurney in Frieljord, is that the "liberation of the mages" is more of an excuse to justify a murderous rampage motivated by personal revenge, that is shown in how he uses the mages that follow him has canon fodder or sacrificial pawns, and how he manipulates other to his advantage.

  4. Unfortunately, Sylas is also a manipulative and murderous bastard, thus tacitly justifying Demacia's treatment of him. Really stupid writing. And the aesthetic of him being shirtless and chained reinforces the idea that he is uncivilized and bestial, a force to be contained, rather than a human to be understood. Bad design all around.

  5. Wow, this sounds scarily like every dictator to have ever existed. Damn some people suck. Also, awesome vid 🙂 Now I know a little more about a game that just sits in a folder somewhere in my library.
