System Shock and the Curious Case of the Immersive Sim

A more positive look at a remake of an older game. I love the remake, I have watched videos about this game, I hope it does well. Maybe you’ll find it fun too, who knows!

Enjoy!

  1. Good vid! Really excited for the remake! I find it kinda funny how you're experiencing the immersive sim style of games backwards in a sense. From the modern ones like Dishonored to a remake of a classic game System Shock. Though its mechanics are slightly outdated, I do recommend you give the original a thorough play. Makes it that much more impressive to see how these "smart" action games evolved and held up so well. And it cannot be understated, System Shock may be the most influential game ever. When it came out it brought such innovative systems that are still being used today. System Shock is the first game to ever implement voice logs if I recall. System Shock is most likely the first 3D "Metroidvania" (as much as I hate that term) with its intertwining maze-like world where you return to key areas to progress as your character gets stronger. Although shotty, the game even encourages all degrees of aiming where Doom, which was out at the time, only allowed for horizontal aim. I feel like System Shock doesn't nearly get discussed enough for its influence and I haven't even mentioned the sequel!
