90% of title screens in gaming are nothing special.
So my stance is mostly correct.
You’re only 10% right 😂
You know what this video is…ART!
So glad you added Skies of Arcadia. Just hearing that music alone was enough to give me goose bumps and conjure up immense nostalgia.
Sometimes it's easy to forget that video games are individual works of art from a developer and I feel we should look at them as so, not as quick disposal distractions in an already rush ahead to the next thing world. Great video brother.
great video idea, i agree. i really enjoy a good title screen. damn, botw's title screen is cheap. i really liked majroa's maskis title screen too, especially the end part when the logo appears at the end.
Yeah man. They truly are art and your examples prove it. Animal Crossing New Horizons is one like you said where I also, everytime I boot it up, listen to that music at least for like 30 seconds! I always say Mario Galaxy 2 is a great one because as you get deeper into the menus, the more instruments get added, the more pumped up it becomes!
A title screen is something of a first impression for a game. If the title screen looks drab, the game is probably not that good. If some effort was spent on the audio / visual aspects of the title screen the chanches are the game beeing nice are a lot higher. Game magazines used to give points in reviews for the “presentation” aspect. I always like it if a game has a nicely made intro / title. I prefer the style where you’ve got a short animated logo with some sound effect transitioning into some music.
Some of my favorites: Sonic The Hedgehog, Batman Return Of The Joker (Nes version, music and animated text), Darkman (Amiga, image effect and music), Robocop 3 (C64, has cool music), Revenge Of Shinobi, Metal Gear (MSX version has animated logo). I found Yoshi’s Islands title screen pretty nice visually.
A bad title screen would be some budget games like Spooky Castle on the C64, it’s just some basic text. Generally I like title screens that have some nice music in them.
Oh man what a great video. Title screens aren't something that I really gave much thought about (I mean like it's not something I look back on and think about when thinking about the games I've played) but this video brought back so much nostalgia. I agree, the title screen is integral to the overall experience. OoT is perfection with that melancholy music that seems so out of place. I really want to play star link now too.
I have no patience so I pound the button to start the game lol.
I wish I could take time to appreciate the artist aspect of some title screens like you do. I admire that quality about you. Not just with video games but with things in everyday life.
By "30 seconds" you mean 2 minutes 40 seconds for Days Gone, plus 52 seconds to get to the actual game, so there isn't a title screen on earth that's worth waiting that long for IMO… So if I have the option to resume a game from suspension, then that's what I do 100% of the time. ; )
Despite Tees grumpy old man with no time and five kids to feed stance, I think this is a great idea for a video.
I used to just watch the wind waker title screen a few times before actually playing the game. It used to relax me before the game and the 1000 hit challenge bullshit.
Maybe an opening cutscene video would be a follow up..
One question you made the game Wario`s Adventure?
Great vid. I wanted to do a video like this ages ago but never wanted to put in the work. I can appreciate the amount of time this must have taken.
You touched on a lot of ones I enjoy. Yoshi's Island and SM3DWorld are two examples. Ocarina of Time is one that, even years later, I will sit and watch.
I also enjoy title screens that are also the game screen. I think A Boy and His Blob on Wii is like that, where the title screen is the Boy's bedroom and when you press start he wakes up and you are then in control. I could be wrong as it was many years ago that I played it, but you get what I mean either way.
And this is what I love about your channel. You make videos that force me to take notice and think about things that I otherwise never would! I'll have to give some thought as to what I would pick as a cool title screen, however I did notice the title screen for Xenoblade Chronicles 2 before I heard you mention it in this video. Honestly, now that you've brought this to my attention I'll be looking more closely at title screens from now on. Great video Tom. You never fail to deliver!
