The Cyrodiilic Empire at the center of the continent is falling, 3 alliances of smaller nations form to take control of the falling empire, so they fight each other at the same time they invade the Cyrodiilic Empire.
(In the game you can choose to be part of one of these three factions, you cannot be part of the cyrodiilic empire in decline, they are an NPC faction)
When it comes to ES lore their is so much. It is a rabbit hole though. The only current channel making ES lore is Fudgemuppet. They are considered one of the most accurate and will let you know if the lore is hazy in some places because it can be. If you do choose to watch them watch their _ Era explained series it's a 5 part series, 1 per era, if you want to know the general lore.
Just a warning ES lore can be contradictory but those contradictions are worked into the lore. If you want to know that part first, check out their video on Dragonbreaks. In short Dragonbreaks are when the timeline splits and because of this there are actions that have happened yet have also not happened. If you want to know more just watch that. They are called Dragonbreaks because the current most accepted time god Akatosh is the Dragon god of time, so a break in the timeline is like a break in the god in a matter of speaking.
interesting fact about the Nord Jorunn Skald King. While portrayed as a barbarian in the trailers he id actually a very somber and intellectual leader. Even having to go as far to kill exile his own Brother to stop a war from breaking out between the Dark Elves, Argonians, and Nords.
