Seeing as your new to 40k I suggest that you look at the templin institute videos named "Imperium of man" "Astra militatum" and "Cadia". There's also If the emperor had a text to speech device that gives you a comedic view of 40k. The lore they discuss is canon but the story of the series itself isn't canon.
Im not saying he is some mega uber god thing we should worship… but since he is giant gold wearing entity that emits a golden light wields a fiery great sword and has the galaxies greatest magical might we might as well cover our bases and pray. (just to be sure)
