PROPER HDR 4K MONITOR REQUIRED TO VIEW THIS VIDEO/PLAYLIST correctly (although it may still play ok on all devices without the wider color gamut and highlight detail). This video/playlist contains the high quality clean version of my playthrough with no commentary. This beautiful game deserves a quality upload and I thought it would be a great option for the few of you who watch on HDR 4K monitors and appreciate this kind of thing. The one with the commentary is on the other playlist.
FILE QUALITY
Source file was recorded in wide color gamut (rec 2020) PQ then rendered in 10Bit ProRes422 (before YT compression). Each video took almost a day to render, upload, and process. Yikes!
YouTube limits uploads to 128 GB, and with this type of footage coming in at almost 10 gb per minute, it meant I had to upload in 10 to 14 minute increments 😢 But the payoff in quality is really worth it! YT really squeezes down files and these files still look pretty darn good.
RESOLUTION AND FRAME RATE
This upload is locked in 60 frames per second and checkerboard 4K which looks really nice. It’s not upscaled at all. As of now, if you see a GOW video that says 4k 60 but shows Krato playing in newgame+ , it’s actually upscaled from 1080p. To get the game to run 4K60, (as of December 20, 2020), I had to use the disc version on the PS5 with no updates to it. No newgame+ 😞
If you have the disc and want to start clean, you can get it to run like this as well! The PS5 certainly does have the power to do 4K 60 so it’s just a matter of Santa Monica wanting to put the time in for a patch. Like I mentioned in the commentary version of the playthrough, it makes you wonder if maybe they are releasing a separate “remastered” version to sell. I hope not, and hope they instead give us a gift of a free upgrade for the holidays instead. Probably unlikely though.
HDR
I’m still learning a lot about grading in my editing, but the results came out decent. You see a lot of “HDR” videos of this game on YT that are really over saturated and over compressed with no grading at all. This was graded in PQ and a monitor that does 1,000 nits can see all highlight details where it’s intended. Hope you enjoy!
