Like everybody else… the first thought that came to my mind when The Medium was announced was “Silent Hill.” The shifting between worlds, the music of Akira Yamaoka, and many other things led us to believe that the Medium would be a more than suitable surrogate. Does the game succeed like many of Bloober Team’s past titles have? Let’s find out.

Bro that World of Warcraft gamer that hates communism line came out of nowhere. Got me good man, haha. Also, your videos are the best.
I might be stretching here but the courtyard seen at 4:36 seems quite similar to the one from Observer, if only in the lay out. I have yet to play the Medium but I loved Observer and when I saw it I got that feeling of deja vu…
Jumping between realities by one's own volition? Silent Hill Origins had something similar with mirrors.
Hi Max, I found a game that you will like, the name is Cry of Fear and it’s free on Steam.
This got to be the laziest ending I've seen in a while. The problem is not that it's open-ended, is that it's not even an ending. My guess is that Bloober team probably intends to make a franchise or at least a sequel. And I honestly hope that they do, 'cause this game had SO MUCH potential.
I enjoyed the game but I do agree it was not as engaging as something like silent hill or the classic re games. I feel like the game could've been better if they added more gameplay elements to use and more tools for Marianne to use just so you could have those moments of tension like you said.
Its not Silent Hill. as much as i tried to see it as the spiritual successor it just is not. great game though. just not silent hill
As Polish person im very disappointed that the game that took place in Poland, with three Polish actors that lend they faces and mocap, there is no polish dub. Also most of textures and items are in english, even when you have a read function and the game is in multiple language already. That really took out from the atmosphere very much, just very stupid decision. Also character animations are very poor.
I gave Medium a honest try and I was disappointed, it is not the spiritual successor to silent hill like people say, it has too many flawes, 1.It was not scary at all, 2. No crazy religious cult to bring there god to them, 3. Virualy no combat, 4. All you do is basically walk around solving easy puzzles and collecting items, overall i was not impressed and this is just my opinion ☹️
The spirit world is clearly inspired by Zdzislaw Beksinskim with it's walls of flesh and orange tones, just look at his art and you will see
Hey, hoping you're doing well and not getting too swamped 🙂
I really liked this game. It nostalgically reminds me of Silent Hill and I love that the Polish game dev. inspired by that game. Akira Yamaoka is GOD, and I was happy when I saw him in the credits.
But still, I must agree with your opinion, it had a lack of the scary "time" and I didn't feel threaten by playing it. But, yeah I will be really happy to see more of this kind of game like Silent Hill. Big thumbs up for the video and for this game!
I wouldn't say that the artistic style is THAT unique. Don't get me wrong, Zdzislaw Beksinski, the "nightmare artist" and the "photographer of dreams" is one of the most unique and bizarre painters for his time. The game was inspired by his art, but I don't think it did much with it. I mean they sure did make me feel like I'm in one of Z's paintings, while in the otherworld, but what of it? Why him? It's like driving to IKEA for some wallpapers to set the mood, "oh honey, what should we get for the new game we're making?"…"Well, here look, let's just slap some Beksinski on it 'cause of…dreams … and nightmares n' shit..you know". To me it falls flat just like "Call of Cthulhu" and "The Sinking City", which were inspired by H.P.Lovecraft and…. really here isn't much in these games other than "THEY*RE INSPIRED BY LOVECRAFT OMG WOOOO". I mean sure it's good to be inspired by something, but at least make an effort to take it to the next level. This is why Bloodborne doesn't fall flat as "another one of those lovecraftian fan services", because it takes the inspiration to the next level.
Another problem is the horror and mystery element in this game. Sure, Marianne is the medium who's seen plenty of the otherworld through her life and it doesn't scare or surprise her, so the game itself is quite WELL LIT for a horror game and pretty much LEADS YOU BY THE HAND. Kind of fits well for "explored vs unexplored" territory idea, there isn't much to scare us since Marianne knows the way around the otherworld. But then again, when our protagonist sees the half-pizza-head monster for the first time, it leaves her traumatized and deathly scared of it. And at the beginning of the game it is indeed scary, while later becomes just a nuisance and in the end just a clown….I guess it kinda fits, since Marianne herself develops more bravery against the thing…I don't know…Maybe someone else can explain the pizza-rapist better.
But the mystery of the game gets solved for you just by progressing through the game, the only difficulty being the puzzle solving. You don't solve the mystery, the mystery gets unraveled for you, while you look for bits n' bobs in the 3D point and click adventure.
Edit: I did like the ambiguous ending though, you can see the problem being solved, but by what means is left out and leaves you puzzled. You have to piece together for yourself how and why did Marianne's This or that decision solve the problem.
Medium? More like Tedium.
No.
I'm obsessed.

So it's similar to Hellblade ?
Hey there Max! Having it completed the second day after it came out, I absolutely agree with your opinion here. Gorgeous art style and music, but bland, boring and not scary gameplay and story that starts to make sense too late amd only through collectibles, so you cannot be sure if you have all the pieces, and you (or at least I) don't feel enough incentive to play it for the second time…Thanks for great review!
It just looks so indie. Nothing unique about the medium.
It's free on game pass and at that price it's absolutely worth a play through. It could have been something really amazing with some small changes but right now it's a slightly above average game with a cool story.
Excellent review.

Short? NO.
Как по мне,что разделение экрана сильно отвлекает от обоих миров. Я бы поразглядывал с большим интересом один или другой вариант мира, но не 2 сразу, у меня нет запасного сознания чтобы воспринимать их одновременно
Did anyone see faces in the trees in the beginning when you played? I would like to know if they put this in the game as an effect or if I was just seeing things because of pareidolia? This game gives eerie vibes of a strong mushroom trip.
Silent hill doesn't have fixed camera angles, you can move the camera with L2 most of the time. Not a good way to start a video…
Thank you Max
That running animation.. LOL is almost so good as SH2 on ps2 xD
Hope bloober team take notes, this is exactly how I felt.
Silent hill kinda killed itself
I'm really enjoying this game. I look at it from a perspective of this is just the beginning. I really think Observer and The Medium is Bloober discovering themselves. We are living in the time that some day will be looked back on as "The early days." I like the direction they are heading, so in turn, I want to appreciate "The early days" while they are happening and also have the luxury of looking back on then fondly.
favorite soundtrack silent so never played any khs or final fantasy both best music ever in games
I just wish the main character didn't quip after every interaction. Game would probably be better (to me) with no dialogue at all.
This is the most boring, stuttering ,unoptimized, tank controlled game. Easiest puzzles ever with no real game play just destroyed what little story there was. I wouldn't recommended spending all that money for such a disappointment especially the ending.
If someone likes psychological horrors and thrillers then he should like this game. I think this is the core factor. If someone expects monsters, demons and out of this world scary things then he will be disapointed. But when someone expects some disturbing story in which traumas and difficult life experiences are real demons that are possesing people making monsters out of them then he should be content.
I like story in this game. I like it's presentantion. All because it's all metaforical and not scary per se. There are emotions hidden behind it that can evoke your past memories or traumas. This is what I personally find much more scarier than imaginary devils, demons or monsters chasing me in tight corridors.
"I didn't even feel curious about the spirit world, and how it works"
Probably gonna give this game a pass for this alone. IMO if you are gonna make a game that focuses on fantastical/mythical/occult elements, you should actually make them something that can be focused on and interacted with. Otherwise it just feels like a gimmick with a thick enough aesthetic to make you not realize its a gimmick right away. It becomes an excuse for a game, which isn't the same thing as being a foundation for a game.
The spirit world of the medium feels somehow related to Beksinski's artwork.
