The Olympics Are Adding Video Games, But Are They The Right Ones?

The Olympics are ADDING esports to their plan in 2020. HOWEVER, it doesn’t include any popular esports titles such as CSGO, League of Legends, Rocket League, Fortnite, or Valorant. What the.. WHY?? According to them games like CSGO “cause violence” and shouldn’t be endorsed by the IOC. Sheesh man.

  1. My opinion has been that while viewership wise it would be great for real esports to be in the olympics it is not necessarily the beat option. Just like the “is it a sport” debate, I don’t see why esports can just be esports and find its own viewership and fan base.

  2. Hey Dusttin great video as ever and I agree with everything you said, like at least Rocket League should definitely be featured. Maybe also a fighting game? But anyway, I do wanted to point out that it's only in the US that there's guns in the news 24/7, most of the rest of the world isn't as crazy about guns as the US.

  3. As someone who has experience dealing with Olympic competition and the IoC, it's not necessarily that games 'promote violence', it's how the violence is being portrayed in the game. Archery and Rifle sports in the Olympics don't have competitors shooting at targets of humans. The main issue with video games in the Olympics is actually the licensing of the games for use and the lack of control over the product. For traditional sports, no one owns Basketball or Soccer or Volleyball or any sport for that matter, so the IoC has complete control over allowing that sport to be conducted and doesn't have to pay anyone for its use, as well as having complete control over the rules which each competition will follow. To bring in a game like Overwatch into the Olympics would require the IoC to obtain licensing rights from Activision Blizzard (which would cost an insane amount of money) because Activision Blizzard will not do it for free, and the entity of Overwatch as a game cannot be fully controlled by the IoC during competition. The rules to basketball and how it's played at the Olympics aren't stored on a server somewhere. Imagine if somehow Tencent were able to introduce code into a game like LoL which activated when certain parameters were met, which gave Chinese eSport athletes some sort of an advantage during the competition. The IoC would require all esports titles to be housed and run off of IoC reviewed and owned servers to ensure fair play, which also will not happen because game studios won't hand over their IP to a third party. There is unfortunately no way to ensure fair play across a variety of different games, owned and operated by a variety of different game developers across the world. Add this to the amount of money it would cost the IoC to use these popular games in their competition, and unfortunately it's just not something we are going to see until esports become far more popular, and even then it would need to be a completely separate event similar to the paralympics, not tacking esports onto the current Olympics framework.

  4. Gods no video games shouldn’t ever be in the olympics no matter what the game is. Remember when the X games had video games. people roasted them rightfully so.

  5. I love esports but this doesn’t feel right…

I really don’t think esports has a place in the Olympics. There’s still sports that are centuries old that aren’t in the Olympics. Esports as a whole is like 30 years old…

  6. I dont want video games at the olympics. I wouldn't mind seeing esports have its own "olympics" though where you have countries build teams for various games and have them compete in some sort of world cup like the OWWC which has always been a fun event seeing new players and players play together who dont/didnt play together in OWL. There is something about having non physical sport at the olympics that doesnt sit right with me.

  7. Adding a videogame that is just virtual real life is stupid. I play videogames because they're an experience that you can n-e-v-e-r fully get in real life atm. It's just redundant pandering if you're competing in "life simulator 2021" instead of something like rocket league which actually brings something unique to the table.
