The Watchful Eyes Ep.3: Alive with the Dead

The Watchful Eyes continue on their trek in the far north of Orid Ashi. Through ruins and woodlands they hunt their foe, the vile necromancers. But every victory has a cost- will theirs be a price too high?

  1. Absolutely made my day seeing this was out! Sorry to hear how much trouble it takes to get these done. Hopefully it’s clear that it’s absolutely appreciated when you get an episode out!

I feel a bit bad but when the talk was about Kogan getting brought back I was all “Nooo! Stop playing with the necro powers!! That is the cause of all of this!” Super looking forwards to what happens next either way!

  2. I understand that its a great hassle to make these videos but I just want to tell you that I appreciate it a lot. This episode was epic in my opinion and the adventure mode shenanigans helps to create a good story but I dont think you should feel as if you have to do it all the time. Sure its nice but I like the fortress mode stuff aswell and I dont want you to overwork yourself!

  3. "Solid chance this one was evil". Uh. Friend? Not notice the experiments you spoke to? No? Did you assume they all signed up to have their eyes removed? They are not undead, they were living people turned into monsters by the necromancer, against their will. You walked past a maggot-crow monster and assume this all went down wholesomely and everyone had a fun time? My dude. No.

  4. SPOILER:
A very minor thing, but it bothered me a bit that the Watchful Eyes seemed to give the necromancer the benefit of the doubt. I understood that the Watchful Eyes would rather have all necromancers destroyed. It was already established that this one did experiments on elves.

Maybe some necromancers are decent and maybe the experiments were on dead or willing elves, but I guess I just saw the Watchful Eyes as more absolute in their view of this. While there are exceptions, dwarves also tend to be so close-minded and traditional in their values, especially since they can remember two sovereign dwarven societies falling to the madness of necromancers.

It just comes off as a paladin-like character wondering if some demons are just decent spirits. While the story can go that way, I think it wasn't established enough.

Edit: Finished watching this. Apparently I have no clue of the characters' motivations. This repetitive adoption of necromancy despite the apparent prior convictions is not to my liking and I think it's just kinda bad storytelling, although Kruggsmash is an excellent storyteller in most ways.

  5. Having seen how Ted doesn't have aversion towards the Kumil soldiers since she also is a necromancer's experiment, and how Amiwa is undead, but still being one of the good guys, I think this is how this fight should be seen by the watchful eyes.

It's not these people or creature's fault that they were experimented on or resurected. Or both. They are merely under the magical influence of those necromancers.

If they can free themselves from it, they can come and join the fight with the watchful eyes, just like our heroes.

Plus, I really would like the idea of a band of misfits, a cast of diverse homonculi with their own talent. All sharing the goal to purge these lands from the necromancers. Avenging the day they were changed and enthralled.

(Even though, Amiwa was transformed by the necromancer at Chamber Point, but… he was bad…right?)

  6. Hello Mr. Kruggsmash.
I watched your badger cult video on the island of dead elves. Hilarious. Well-done. The tree with morbid adornments was the best.

Anyways, I have a question. I genned a world in 0.47.05 and for some reason all the elves are on island continents not connected to the mainland and no other civilizations are on those continents. To be clear – there are no elves on the mainland at all. I don't quite understand how this happens. Have you seen this often? I'm not willing to browse legends because it's endless scrolling. I haven't played DF since i think 2010 but i played it very often then.

I really wanted elf neighbors on the mainland so I could eventually kill them but I don't particularly want to embark on an elf only island either. Guess I need to regen.

I've been modifying dwarf fortress to work on controller. I would like to continue using your tile set but I cannot find the unicode key that produces an Up arrow?

I have found unicodes that produce down left and right arrows, none of which are in proper positions according to the DF character table.

    Any thoughts?
