Filmmaker Richard Raaphorst has denounced CAPCOM for some of the monster designs featured in Resident Evil Village, alleging in a LinkedIn post that they have been taken without authorization or credit from his 2013 movie Frankenstein’s Army, where a battalion of Russian soldiers during World War II steps inside the lair of a mad scientist and have to deal with his flesh and metal war machines.

“In 2013 I directed my film Frankenstein’s Army. It’s a crazy monster movie filled with my own creature designs, one of which has been used – completely without authorization or credit in the newest Resident Evil game.”
In this video Dreamcastguy talks about his recent review of Resident Evil 8 and why he loves the game but looks at the new claims made by a director and rants about the Sturm monster shown in the game as a boss while also showing some gameplay.
Raaphorst then proceeded to share some image comparisons of one specific monster as it is depicted in Frankenstein’s Army and Resident Evil Village. There’s admittedly a significant resemblance between the two, as you can see below.

  1. No doubt the film inspired the game's monsters, But are there any original monsters anymore? The game also has werewolves and vampires, so is Capcom going to be sued by the original creators of those creatures? Where is the line here?

  2. I absolutely loved the game!! I mean, I see all the relations between the monsters and stuff, there are some differences and Plagiarism is usually like an exact copy of it so idk where that will go. I think the best option is just to give the Director credit and a big paycheck and move forward personally.

  3. Honestly everything is inspired by something, especially the horror. Propeller monster kind of gave it away, but other designs are very common in the medium

  4. The other monsters are a reach, the propeller monster is a direct rip off unless Capcom can prove the date of the concept art prior to movie’s concept. Either way, settle this quickly and give they guy credit and possible some royalties and move on. There’s nothing absolutely new when it comes character art.

  5. I don't know. The monster fits perfectly within the RE aesthetic, so I can see how an artist working within that style could easily have subconsciously borrowed a few elements from a film they might barely recall having seen.

Apart from that, it's a b movie that nobody saw from nearly 10 years ago. People draw inspiration from that sort of material all the time. There's definitely a lot of grey area here. It can be argued that much of RE 7 is a ripoff of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and other subsequent films that ripped off that one.

Personally, I think the director of that movie is being a bit of a baby about it. Some might even have felt flattered that one of their designs inspired one in the game, but it's his right to feel however he likes about it.
