  1. I would definitely put "To the Edge" from FFXIV: Shadowbringers on this list. Not only is the song absolutely gorgeous while still being intense enough for a boss battle, but the meaning of its lyrics can be interpreted in two ways. The first interpretation is that the song is a plea from Azem (the player character's past life) or the other Ascians to Elidibus to cease his fighting to resurrect their world by destroying the current world, or it could be a desperate cry from the Ascians in general for Azem to put an end to their suffering and madness and "catch us before we fall".

Also the song was written by a composer fighting cancer, in hospital, during the middle of the pandemic. Soken is amazing.

  2. yeah, probably should have lead the 3 houses entry with a spoiler warning…. If nothing else, a "the next entry is from 3 houses, but it gets deep into spoiler territory when dissecting the lyrics, so for you spoiler free people, go play the game first." On the other hand, i now have yet another reason to pick up the game; that is, once it has been long enough for me to forget the entire game spoilers you dropped…

  4. It almost sounds like "It Has To Be This Way" is a duet of sorts. Raiden's voice is definitely the main one but, you can hear another voice singing slightly fainter along with it in some parts. It's almost as if Raiden and Armstrong are coming to the realization that they aren't so different and look at each other with newfound respect and admiration.

I will agree though, you always see this making lists, so it's easy to see why you left it off 😉

  6. You know, there's definitely one Final Fantasy tune that could have made this list, and I'm kinda shocked it didn't even make the Honorable Mentions, much less end up on the list: "Otherworld" from Final Fantasy X, the theme that not only plays during the battle with Braska's Final Aeon, but also during Sin's attack on Zanarkand in the very beginning.

  7. For people who like video game villain songs, I highly recommend Bury the Light from Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition. From the POV of fan favorite Vergil, it's such a deep blend of the heavy rock the series is known for and soulful lyrics and vocals that perfectly describe the unwavering, dark mindset of Vergil's character, with the instruments and melodies used in unusual and haunting ways to create a truly memorable piece. It is such a beautifully intense song that it's easy to forget Vergil is indeed a villain even though the lyrics tell us in detail the hellish path he feels he has no choice but to tread.

  8. [Rant] I personally think "revenge is bad" plots ala-No more heroes and Last of us 2 tend not to work is because they give you no choice(outside of not playing the game) and then tell you it was a no good, terrible, awful thing you just did.

Like, you should be able to make the choices to kill or spare Abby's friends, choose whether or not they deserve to die just for being present when Joel died, or employ non-lethal methods on human enemies, and then finally deciding whether it's truly truly worth killing Abby.

If you kill her, it's about the same as the current ending, Ellie let her hatred consume her and it pushed all her loved ones away. If you don't kill her then it could be a little brighter, she can focus on and strengthen her relationships, making her life about something other than Abby.

Idk I'm just kinda mad how it was all handled

  9. A game villain song I think deserves some recognition is Bury The Light from Devil May Cry 5. Sure it's a bit drawn out at 9 minutes but it knows how to keep the attention of a listener for the whole time

  10. I'm kind of curious where he got the info that Jonathan Coulton wrote Sweet Victory. While he did write a song or two for the Spongebob Musical, I'm not seeing him credited anywhere. It was David Glen Eisley and Bob Kulick that wrote the song, and a good four years before it premiered in Band Geeks.

  11. I know some of my fellow Gen Zs are gonna disagree on me with this personal choice, but the Drillbot song from Skylanders Giants. I know it's silly for a dead game series, but damn if it isn't funny as hell.

  12. I think the top half of the list is significantly better than the bottom half, but a large chunk of that is simply better villains. As much as I like Phantom and TGMP, they are meant to be comedic songs. There is more soul behind most of the top of the list, more meaning, and they make the villains for whom they play mean more.

  13. Oh well. If you're ever curious about two Villain songs, I recommend a few from XIV. The ones I think most thematic would be "Wayward Daughter" and "Return to Oblivion".

  14. Maruki is the first example in my memory of an Anti-Villain in the Persona series, and I'm disappointed that he was only used as a post-game end boss, because a character like that deserves their own game.

  15. I am surprised Drill-X from Skylanders Giants wasn’t in this. Granted, it wasn’t an actual song, just speech said in rhyme and with a metal voice, but was still good, I think
