This is getting very interesting what is going on with Sony behind the scenes. Why have they been so silent and passive for 3 years.
Big reorganization in 60 years is happening for the company. What once was Sony Corporation with independent business for all companies under Sony is about to end.
Let me start with Sony Electronics and their semiconductor division. They have been merged together as Sony Electronics Corporation on April 1, 2020. They are now separate from Sony Group. But Sony Financials divisions were merged into one Sony Financials Holding group under Sony Group on April 1, 2020. What was left was entertainment divisions.
All entertainment divisions will become one entertainment group under Sony Group on April 1, 2021. Sony Corporation will change name to Sony Group Corporation on April 1, 2021.
As of now, movies, music and games have been entertainment pillars, but Sony wants to add anime as 4th pillar of entertainment. The entire anime sector includes Aniplex, Animax, streaming companies and Sony Music Japan. SIE sells PlayStation so that is one platform they will use.
Sony Corporation formed capital alliance with Kadokawa. They will cooperate with Kadokawa on their new IPs turned into anime and game adaptations to work with independent companies in Japan. You have already seeing a glimpse of that multiplat business with Shueisha on Demon Slayer. Aniplex is publisher.
But what about exclusives in the anime sector? Aniplex has expanded A1-Pictures to 876 employees as of Oct 2019 compared to 187 employees as of Oct 2017, so something is happening behind the scenes. Plus rumors about Sony has acquired Level-5 and Nihon Falcom. Which are good fit for multimedia projects.
Aniplex did also established a new subsidiary on April 1 2020, Boundary, which will focus on 3DCG animation. It will be used for television series and movies, but also for various other video productions. What the latter means could be MVs for their idol multimedia franchise (22/7) if you look at Sunrise's production model for Love Live! series and even video games related. 2D animation with CGI is very popular nowadays and cost effective. More companies in Japan are adapting CGI studio.
As for PlayStation Studios, Keiichiro Toyama has already mentioned twice why he left SIE's Japan Studio. The current AAA climate is not for him and SIE has been infected by the industry to move on with AAA production to focus on wider audience compared to before where creators at Japan Studio had freedom to create for their own preference without worrying about scale and audience. Japan Studio has moved away from AA which he prefers over AAA pressure. Junya Okura added he had learned a lot to work with a big team but creativity is more important to him than appeal to a larger audience. Toyama, Kazunobu Sato, Okura, Miki Takahashi (Shibito designer of Siren series and lightning artist on Knack series) and assistant Knack series producer (William) joined Bokeh Game Studios. Naoko Sato stayed at Japan Studio who was the writer of the first Silent Hill and Siren series.
I believe SIE has hired more Konami staff to Japan Studio including Hiroyuki Owaku (very crucial for SH2 and SH3 story). If they already got talents like Tomokazu Fukushima, So Toyota, Takashi Mizutani, Shigeo Okajima why stop there?
