Have you tried using stone floor stacked on top of itself? I currently have 20 stacked with no decay and they are registering as foundational pieces. (blue color)
Maybe the iron wood pole's revert the decay sequence when you stack them without wood or stone walls in between? Perhaps that solves the hole in it.
Also, do you have to build the iron wood pole's horizontaly to go higher? I would think that if they touch the vertical ones, that it would register enough.
