Also, at your workstation you can repair your tools, the little tool icon on the left of the pop up screen, it will flash when there are tools in your inventory that can be repaired 😀
As for cooking meat, if you can't directly on the fire, can you build a cooking rack, or a fire pot? Something in your inventory maybe? Seems odd that you wouldn't be able to cook in the early stages of the game.

You can make a cooking rack that goes over the fire to cook the meat. As soon as it beeps take it off right away or it will turn to charcoal.
