  1. "Build a bed." Oh, shite i need a fire place before sleeping or else i will freeze to death. "Build a fireplace." Oh shite, my house is filling up with smoke, i'm dying. I need to build a chimney. "Build a chimney." Oh shite, it's storming outside, i need to build a roof on my chimney otherwise my fireplace gets to wet. "Builds roof on the chimney." One of the best survival games i ever played. Definitely a worth to buy indeed! The atmosphere and those little details, its so immersion. I have way more fun in this game then those so called triple AAA cash grab games.

  2. Your complaints about portals is a bit much. You don't need to use them, that's fine, don't use them. But let other people have their fun with them, I wish more survival games had some form of fast travel like that and respected my time a little more.

Otherwise great review. I look forward to digging into this game myself.

  3. Don't remember you being this excited about a title – so much that halfway through the review I went and bought the game.
I spent the entirety of past weekend playing it almost non-stop. It's so good!

  4. lmao I dont get it, people can only be bored of being at home to think this is the best survival game. I don't understand the fun of the game. looks like any other rpg, I saw a lot of review videos talking about the game and trying to convince me to buy, but in fact it didn't convince me at all. but I also don't like zeldas or witchers, it's not my type of game, this type of game easily bores me. I do not find this type of game challenging, on the contrary, I’m playing Stationeers, it’s fun, it’s challenging and I don’t depend on other players to have a good experience. I dont think I have the fantasy of being a Viking, idk

  5. It's Viking Terraria for me, it feels so intuitive and is just genuinely enjoyable.

I spent 2 hours last night sailing around islands to try and find that sodding vendor in Blackwood (Yeh didn't get him either :s).

The metal thing makes sense and portals are useful, I play solo and sometimes with my wife. I see what you're saying but it does make things a bit better for me when I'm just farming iron. I mean I still technically need to sail to the island where the swamp is and sail back with the iron (Boat storage means I can carry 130 iron total rather than there and back with just 20 each time). The portals make it so I don't need to build 55 forges everywhere to repair my gear. I can focus on the fun travel part.

The issue is building forges and a full base on every island would take just a bit too long. I think in a multiplayer server I fully agree with your thoughts, a large base would be built in minutes rather than 30 minutes that it can take me to properly level, plan, get resources for etc.

  6. Question, as someone who's never found survival games to be that much fun, could Valhiem change my mind? I've played a bit of the forest but as with most survival games, I just don't find building bases and worrying about food to be that interesting. Is there more to this game that could make it worthwhile for someone like me?

  7. Gonna have to try this, It's crazy but nowadays I think these low budget early access games are more fun than the AAA big budget games.
Maybe it's me getting old, but does anyone else feel this lol

  8. I think portals are ok, but they should make them more rare to build and more end game-ish. And introduce a kind of mount horse or elk or some mythical tamale beast that can help tow the cart, because not only is the world massive, so are the islands. Introducing mounts will help do what the portals are trying to do, making vast areas more accessable. And also make them "storable" on only certain boats so you can sail with your mount to be lands. And then back on portals, they should negate all items being able to travel through the portal except gear, tools and food. Basically the essentials.

  9. Try the portals before you dismiss them, very ignorant of you to give a review without exploring an essential game mechanic. They area god sent and they do not diminish the adventuring side of the game because you still have to sail to get Metal ore, which is the primary reason to sail once you hit the iron age. I loved this review overall but was disappointed about the prejudice for a game mechanic you haven't even tried yet.

  10. Mack. You've got a point there with the portals but my guess is that this is intended by the developers to hit the sweetspot in contrast to all the other survival games. And they do hit the sweetspot in so many ways in this game to flatten the "easy to learn hard to master"-curve here imoh. My bet (and suggestion to the devs) is that they'll balance the chance to build portals (i.e. lower the chance to find surtling cores or have a specifi level/boss that needs to be reached to make portals available in end-game). At the moment it only needs a dungeon or two to find them. And think about players that do not have the chance or will to play with so many buddies. It's way easier gathering stuff having 9 friends with you than with only 2 other players. Everybody's having less time to play (except for the kids out there) but can now enjoy the beauty of a (somewhat casual) GREAT survival game. But besides that, you sir… again….. hit the spot! Cheers

  11. Controversial opinion:

    I like the portals.
The game is very beginner friendly. I miss this from most other games. Ressources you have, you have. Gets destroyed? Drops 100% of the building materials.
And if I die in the swamp, even tho I have been prepared really well, I don't want to build another ship, just to sail back there and get my stuff.

Yes this might be different in multiplayer/coop. But in singleplayer, I am actually kinda mad that you can't bring metals with you.
I have been running across the dark forest for about 10 hours and only got ~35-45 bronze (2 copper 1 tin)
then I join another world and there is copper and tin like right next to the guy. With rng this hard, I really would like portals to allow you to transport metals in singleplayer. Because it is not "charming" to play a walking simulator.
Other than that, this game is a 9.5/10 for me.
10/10 once more content is coming.

  12. Nice to see games actually being used for more interesting concepts.

Like seriously, we have a medium that can take us anywhere and yet we have so many carbon copy games with paper-thin themes and concepts that have been done to death.

  13. This game looks like a student’s unity project, but the game looks so deep and the response has been so good that I think it’s anything but.

I think I will give this game a try, as it seems to be the holy grail among survival games that have come out recently, and this is early access!

  14. Loved your stories! me and my 2 mates had the same "issue" with the sea serpent. Second day playing and we decided to explore the brave new world… when we landed one of us died by a 2 star skeleton, we grabbed his gear, ran to the boat and for a moment thought "oof, thank God we've made it". we were deep in the middle of the ocean when we saw the monster.
We died, lost all of our 2 days gameplay crap and laughed for hours.
Im loving every second of this game.

  15. Honestly, not a great review. You spent a lot of time telling us how great of a game it is and not much time telling us why its so great. Not trying to diss you, just some constructive critism. The stories were entertaining though.

  16. This seems like a game that would be fun with friends who are also interested in playing a survival game. So not for me if I could only play alone or with randoms.

  17. For the rant against portals, you will end up having to go remarkably far away and portals will allow a smoother transition, despite as you mention you cant transport metal which is important. Once you have sailed 45 minutes away in your best boat, and then die, you will be happy that you dont need to spend 2 hours sailing on a shitty raft to get your stuff back.
