  1. I started a new game with the same seed as you are using (but with the same character I already had). I got stuck in a storm on the way to the Elder and my boat flipped over and sunk and I drowned and I lost all my good bronze stuff. That set me back a day or two. I haven't done the Elder yet, still exploring that new island where it is located. This seems to be a really good seed. There is a swamp over there too, but I won't say where 🙂

  2. If you jump out of the boat anywhere and nobody is driving it, the ship will stop. Be aware the parking close to rock can be dangerous, storms can raise and lower sea level bumping your ship against the rocks and destroying it. Make sure the first thing is when you arrive on an island is to make some basic home. 2×2, with a bed and portal. that way you don't stuck on the island.

Another tip, if you build on a small hill like you did on the new land, and use pillars to hold up your house, you can build campfire under the house. The fire will be protected and you can sleep.

You can't demolish a boat, but you can destroy it. You get back the materials either way.
