Valheim – Viking Valiance (Early Access Review)

i won’t lie, i honestly thought Valheim was just another generic rust survival crafting open world cringefest when i first saw it pop up on my Steam recommended – but i was dead wrong. luckily i gave into peer pressure and after letting it take more than 50 hours of my life i’ve made a review for it. enjoy!

  1. Looks cool but rather boring at the same time. It doesn't seem to do anything new for itself. If you're gonna make a survival game at this point, it needs to feel fresh, and this game simply doesn't.

  2. Problem I have is that its centered on combat, and i'd argue the combat is by far the worst aspect of the game. It's stiff unresponsive, enemies move weird. I honestly think the game is an allright game, but people who think this is some form of master piece clearly have very low standards. It's good, it's not great let alone a master piece.

  3. Valheim is not perfect, but I can say it's the most fun game I've played in about 2 years. As someone who loved Skyrim, and still regularly drops dozens of hours into Minecraft, Valheim hits every spot that needs scratching. Pair that with fantastic (if a bit understated) soundtrack, and my preexisting love of Norse mythology, and you have a game that was seemingly tailor-made for me. A bit grindy at parts, especially the mining aspect, but I haven't enjoyed just playing a game like this in a long time. It's way too early to say, but I'd be willing to bet that if they open up modding options and continue to innovate, Valheim could become the new Minecraft.

Great video, Davo. You're killing it, King.

  4. Friends (who normally never play these types of games) tried to peer pressure me into playing this but I just don't feel it at all.
Another fantasy setting, yay, viking flavored this time, woohoo. IMO it doesn't do anything uniquely well and just feels really generic to someone who's played the forest, terraria, stranded deep, raft, green hell etc.

  5. This game seems like what you'd get if you took ark, removed the PvP & dinosaur taming cough*theonlygoodparts*cough and yeeted it into valhalla. The only thing you do is grind resources & fight a hand full of bosses, then what?

  6. I assume the game uses a voxel engine, judging from the fact it has procedurally generated maps and has a landscape modification option for base making. This is why the art style went pixel art route since it's very compatible and easier to build upon than having a dedicated, high res textures that might not really blend well with their game system.

  7. I don't like survival games, but playing with my Friend and exploring a new world having a new experience without needing tô search for food and water every 5 minutes is so nice and boss are so rewarding, like Worth grinding

  8. The only REAL issue I have on Valheim is that resource grinding gets progressively absurd and makes me wanna die.
As if I wanna go from 6 bronze to 20 iron to 40 silver.

  9. great video as usual though i must hard disagree about the graphics. I thought the same thing when I first started I thought the voxel looking stuff was just early access stuff and the would put in higher res textures later, but the more I played the more the environment and ambiance blew me away. The fog, the storms, the wind, every except the character and enemies looks incredible and was more immersive than I've been in a game in a long time.

  10. I'm pretty on the fence on this one but maybe I need a new game to mix things up a bit. Does this run better than Rust, or is does it also have ungodly recommended system requirements to not run/look like shit?

    (… No…)
wait!! what!!! what kind of game lets you regen without all your stuff. How dare they….
(I don't believe in reincarnation, how about we don't regen you??? happy now? or do you still want your stuff?)

  12. Your progress loss problem can be mitigated by leaving the good tools and armor at your base, placing a teleporter at the base and setting off on a ship, armed with a good bow, basic tools and enough supplies to build a portal when you land, that way if you die you lose basic tools (wood axe is cheap af, antler pick is easy to replace, hammer super cheap) and the portal materials, once you make landfall where you wanted to go, you place the portal, link it and warp home to go grab your good gear. This stops your good shit being stranded at sea, on land it can be a pain in the ass to get your gear but fortunatly if your inventory is empty everything goes to the same slot so you can go right back to the weapons you were using before the death.
