Video Game Book Club — Video Fever by Charles Beamer

Video Fever is a very strange book which came out right as people started to think video games were hurting their children. It was published in 1982 and just feels strange. Like my grandfather wrote a book about video games but never bothered to talk to anyone about them. Charles uses a lot of stereotypes to try and prove this. The way it is written though was a bit confusing. I couldn’t tell if the people he was talking about were real or if they were made up. It also seemed like he had never set foot in an arcade and seemed to have little understanding of what video games were.

It ends with Charles talking about how parents should pay more attention to their children. I agree with this part, but he seems to not understand this isn’t always possible. This is a rather strange book and almost a time capsule is many ways.

  1. This was a weird one! I wanted to find some books I disagree with and I found this one and a few others about violence in video games. What do you think about the subject?

  2. Interesting book… Man when I was about 6 or 7, mid 80s, I'd go to the local fast food place and watch the 20ish guys play wonderboy and smoke…. We got a c64 that Christmas 😂
