VIDEOGAMES – WILL IT EVER BE ENOUGH?? Graphics + More

What Does DOOM ETERNAL, GHOST OF TSUSHIMA, RED DEAD REDEMPTION 2, THE LAST OF US 2 and so forth have in common? They are visually and sometimes Gameplay as well – ground breaking video games. Games with the best graphics and most immersive worlds that become the new standard as opposed to a peak that will never be beaten.

Today’s discussion on Gaming My Whole Life is about the expectations, we as Gamers have of developers and publishers. Doom Eternal Graphics, Ghost Of Tsushima Graphics, Red Dead Redemption Graphics and so on are cutting edge and cost hundreds of millions of dollars to make a reality but we still expect MORE.

This desire for better video game graphics is what makes next gen consoles so exciting. It’s why every screenshot from every exclusive game on the PS5 and Xbox Series X is inspected – even though most of us still have a PS4 or Xbox One. Exclusives always have larger budgets and so normally have the most impressive graphics.

  1. Completely agree, gameplay is definitely something that has been lacking especially in these last couple of years or so. I think we will continue to be surprised with the gaming industry and how far developers can take visuals, but that's just my opinion. By the way, great video, I really enjoyed this topic!

  2. Fantastic Topic, there is a lot to unpack. Correct me if I'm wrong but feels as though your core question is, "Will Gameplay ever Seriously develop?" I agree that it does feel as though in most Genres of Games we have hit a limit of what we are able to do. I can't see them altering the core gameplay of FIFA, FORZA or indeed any Sports title. If you were to add an element of "Free Will" to use your own example dropping dirt on a an NPC, then where in Sports Genres would you fit it in?
Maybe some sort of Argument with the Team Manager at half time? or the Ability to get out of your Vehicle & walk around Famous City Monuments? I personably think these are good ideas, just look at how well people took to discovery mode in Assassins Creed. BUT there is the worry that if you give your player more "Free Will" & the ability to do what they want you lessen the experience your offering to the player or muddy the narrative flow of a story based game.

In the World of Triple "A" titles I don't think we are going to see Gameplay Develop at any grater speed than we are seeing it Develop at the moment. (I might revisit this statement when we finally see some Gameplay details about GTA6 or the Next Elder Scrolls Game) The indie Scene on the other hand is really pushing Gameplay Innovations by reducing the scope of their Games. Quite often now I'm finding a lack of "You Can Do Anything" far more appealing in a game.

If you haven't already, I highly recommend trying out HitMan 3 in VR in terms of being able to do "Anything" that Game certainly make some head way in the direction of your "Dropping dirt on a an NPC" gameplay development.

Love the video & the Topic. Keep up the good work.

  3. You bring to the table a really interesting topic George, totally agree with you it's never is going to be enough. But in the end I always end going back to my old time favorites like MGS or RE for the PS1.

  4. Another good discussion. Yes, I think we can still expect more in terms of graphics and gameplay, but like you I think that it's more important to improve more on gameplay.

To be honest I want the games to look good but they don't need to be absolutely realistic and incredible looking. As I said in your video about Fallour 3, I'm playing Wasteland 3 right now, an isometric game and while it looks good enough you can see that the budget is smaller, but I'm having such a blast playing it. That's also the reason why I was fine getting a Xbox Series S rather than a Series X.

I'm personally more interested in what the producers can do in terms of art style rather than pure graphics, like the cartoony games age much better, and you example of Kena is a good one because it's not just good graphically, it has a nice art style. Like, which game looks better between Horizon : Zero Dawn and The Legend of Zelda : Breath of the Wild? Yes, that's personally what I want to be more greedy for, more interesting art styles, come up with things such as Everwild and you have my interest.

Sorry, I guess I'm diverging a bit, but that's what I like about your discussions, they enable more points of views.

And so, you are now playing The Witcher 3? Are you finally enjoying it? Because I remember you told me that you didn't like it.
