The description from Black Library:
A series of mysterious murders in a hive city pique the interest of Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn. There’s a commonality between them all that suggests something deeper than simply random acts of a crazed killer – but what could be behind the brutal slayings, and what will it mean for the safety of the entire city?

  1. I liked it, 40k always runs the risk of making "the bad guys" look too much like Saturday morning cartoon characters and devolving into devoid-of-nuance, rigid, "good versus evil", and stories like this one help to prevent that.

Also from what I've read, Abnett has put a lot of time into talking to soldiers who have seen combat and trying to work their experiences into his writing, which, I personally appreciate, with the aim not necessarily of saying "war bad", but more "careful what you wish for"

  2. I enjoy your work a lot! would not typically be one to critique. Since you sincerely asked though I did notice one error on your story "Machine Ways".
At 4:17 in you explain that the piles of scrap would be Smelted or Recycled. It could not be Smelted as it had already been extracted from ore, alloyed, used and scrapped. You only get one smelt. (Plus or minus subsequent cleanup to remove the original mineral slag)

Thank you for all your work!

  3. I kinda think half the point of the story is to show tgat not all that the inquisitors have to deal with us some dark chaos cult or flashy git shiny villains but m7ndane stuff tgat I felt even eisonhorn felt let down just as you did by the fact the cilliams were sad, confused guardsmen still doing their duty and yet they had to be killed just like a traitor or cultist and that for me was the real tragedy. Anyway excellent reading dude

  4. First I would like you to know that out of all the narrator's I've listened to on YouTube You Are in my top three best narrators that I've listened to. That being said your critique and opinion of the story I just do not agree with. I feel like the author was trying to give you a different perspective of the characters and the universe. In my opinion the point of the story was that it was built up everyone thought it was going to be a called and then it was the soldiers that gave their lives for the emperor and they were still doing the app first work from their perspective and the point of the story was the turmoil inside the inquisitors soul when he had to kill all these Imperial guards that had served the emperor and we're still serving their emperor. In my opinion the story was great. I really like the ending and the reveal and everything.

  5. Back when I first read this, I thought the same. Now hearing it read by you, and after serving in the military, I feel it's meant to be a subversion of what all WH 40K typically is and what the fans have long expected. A group of veterans that have pushed the Imperium's borderline cult-worship of the God Emperor over the line and well into that territory with hidden, ritualistic actions. In a way, one could maybe argue this was actually the work of Tzeentch. That possibility aside, the closeness to the heart of our reality it has makes it all the more grim dark.

  6. I'm of suuuuuch a different opinion about the end… Sure, cosmic horror has its place in 40K, it pretty much defines the environment in that the Imperium operates. Now something happens that reeks of chaosy stuff, but it is done by the people of the Imperium itself, in an attempt of opposing Chaos. They too have been corrupted by mere contact with it, and act like worshipers themselves. That's not just the direct, physical threat that Chaos is, that's the metaphysical, spiritual threat of it, the pure and unadulterated existential horror of the 40K universe.

  7. Wow, I really think you outdid yourself with this one and your narrations have increased exponentially in quality over a short while! In contrast to your take on this story, I found it to be really nice to have a more "human" resolution to the mystery.

  8. I have really been enjoying your work the last few months. Now after watching this vid till the end, I only have one critic if that's the right word 🤔, and that is the sound, sound effects sometimes drowns your voice out if for instance your voicing a women.
