Join me as I attempt the #encounter10x10 #terrainbuilding challenge. Jo from www.encounterterrain.com puts on a competition every month to build a diorama or tabletop terrain piece that fits inside of a 10cm by 10cm square. This month, the challenge was extended to 20×20.
For the theme of this month, the topic was “For Glory and Honor”. I immediately thought of a statue inspired by Trajan’s column, but I wanted to make something that I could actually use on my tabletop for Warhammer 40k. Using this model from thingiverse.com user Vontragg (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3672164) as my statue, I went about creating a super detailed pedestal.
Hope you enjoy the classical baroque music as I take you through my journey in building this awesome looking terrain piece.
There are far more talented contestants and terrain builders that take part in this challenge, but the point isn’t winning, it’s having fun (And I think I accomplished that). I hope you will take a shot and try to build something for a future challenge. I look forward to seeing what you all come up with.
The pedestal is made up of a wooden dowel, XPS foam, and bits of cardstock and heavier chipboard. The base came from an old appliance and it measured 17cm in diameter, so it fit the challenge well. Credit to my close friend Mark for 3d printing the STL I sent him on his resin printer. The detail on it is fantastic!
For the paint scheme, I dry-brushed a bronze acrylic paint over a brown base, and applied a teal wash to get the oxidized look for all the bronze parts. The rest of the stone got a light gray dry-brush.
