Next difficulty spike is indeed massive, poison sucks so much.
You can solo him quite well. Just stay at maximum range and wittle him down with fire arrows. Apparently digging a big old trench around the altar is also a good strategy.

I have soloed The Elder, you'll want fire arrows and a fully upgraded bow, then you just need to shoot at the boss from as far away as possible, it'll take a while, but you can whittle down his health little by little. I can't imagine trying to melee him to death solo, but arrows definitely work.
